The best time to hike the L'Étang du Doul loop is during spring or outside of the summer months. This allows you to avoid mosquitoes, which can be present in warmer weather, and offers the best opportunities to observe flamingos and other bird species in their natural habitat.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter paved sections, narrow and sometimes uneven trails, and paths winding alongside vineyards. A distinctive feature is the series of wooden boardwalks that traverse over the water of the former salt lagoons, offering a unique perspective. There are also some slightly rocky or abrupt areas near the water's edge and moderate inclines to reach elevated viewpoints.
Yes, the L'Étang du Doul loop is generally considered easy and accessible for a wide range of hikers, including beginners and families. While some sections might require sturdy shoes due to marshy or stony passages, the overall elevation gain is low, making it a pleasant walk for most fitness levels.
While the trail is located within the Parc Naturel Régional de la Narbonnaise en Méditerranée, which generally welcomes dogs, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash to protect the local wildlife, especially the numerous bird species, and to ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.
The area is a haven for nature lovers. You can often spot diverse flora and fauna, most notably flamingos and other bird species, especially outside of the summer season. The lagoons are rich ecosystems, so keep an eye out for various aquatic birds and local plant life.
The picturesque village of Peyriac-de-Mer serves as an attractive starting and ending point for the loop. You can find parking within the village, which provides convenient access to the trailhead. Specific parking areas are usually well-marked.
The trail offers several scenic spots. You'll cross the Former salt marshes - Pontoon, enjoy a Viewpoint overlooking the Étang du Doul, and get a broader View of the Étang de Bages-Sigean. Another highlight is the Viewpoint over the Étang du Doul and Peyriac-sur-Mer, offering splendid panoramas of the village and surrounding lagoons.
No, there are generally no permits or entrance fees required to access the hiking trails within the Parc Naturel Régional de la Narbonnaise en Méditerranée, including the L'Étang du Doul loop. The park is open to the public, encouraging visitors to enjoy its natural beauty responsibly.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails. A significant portion follows the Sentier des Crêtes and the Sentier des Etangs. You'll also briefly intersect with the Sentier Saline and other smaller local paths like Peyriac-de-Mer - Bages and Sentier du golfe Antique - partie 3.
Given the varied terrain, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are recommended, especially for potentially marshy or stony sections. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, and consider bringing sun protection (hat, sunscreen) as parts of the trail can be exposed. Don't forget water, and binoculars if you're interested in birdwatching!
Yes, as the trail starts and ends in the charming village of Peyriac-de-Mer, you'll find various amenities. There are cafes and restaurants in the village where you can enjoy a meal or a refreshing drink before or after your hike.
The water of the lake, which seems to lie in a volcanic crater, is twice as salty as the sea and contains 70 g/l!!!! Unfortunately you can't see the flamingos more clearly in the pictures 😏 they were too far away. The village of Pelac de Mer is beautifully decorated. We didn't manage to taste the wine there. But I would be interested to know whether the high salt content of the neighboring lake has an influence on this...
