Running
This Tour heads out on peaceful trails through dappled mixed woodland, emerging into the open at Froggatt Edge. From here the way ahead stretches out invitingly, a silver ribbon looping the purple moor. Froggatt is popular with rock climbers, and you’re likely to see them topping out to your right, while to the west big views reach across the Derwent Valley towards Eyam and Middleton Dale. The return route crosses the aptly named Big Moor, following the quieter White Edge trail north. This is a haven for birds: look out for Merlin, Curlew and Snipe as you run.
For a 6-mile (9.6 km) loop, this Tour packs in a lot of great running. The majority of the 755 ft (230 m) ascent comes in the initial climb from Grindleford and then the hill up to White Edge; the rest of the route lends itself perfectly to fun, fast running. Underfoot the trails are clear and well-maintained, but we’d still recommend trail running shoes for the best grip. Most runners will take less than one and a half hours to complete this Tour, but due to the remote moorland sections and exposure it’s always worth carrying a spare jacket and basic emergency kit. The Grouse Inn and the cafe at National Trust Longshaw are both short detours from the main route towards the end of this tour, which finishes at Grindleford station, which has its own cafe.
The 16th century Chequers Inn below Froggatt Edge has comfortable rooms and serves great food. Or try Cafe 19 at Calver crossroads. For more shops and accommodation options consider Baslow, Hathersage or Bakewell.
