Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Tour of the Sancy suitable for beginner road cyclists?

No, this route is generally considered a hard road ride, requiring very good fitness. It features significant elevation changes and challenging climbs, making it more suitable for experienced cyclists. Shorter, still challenging, loops exist in the Sancy massif if you're looking for less demanding options.

What is the terrain like for road cycling on this route?

The terrain is predominantly mountainous with numerous climbs, including several iconic passes. While generally well-paved and suitable for road bikes, some segments may be unpaved and difficult. Much of the route stays above 1,000 meters in altitude, offering a true mountain riding experience.

What scenic views or landmarks can I expect along the way?

You'll be treated to diverse and panoramic views of the Sancy landscape, including high plateaus, glacial valleys, and mountain lakes. The route passes through areas like the Cézallier and offers views of the region's volcanic origins. You'll also pass through charming towns like Le Mont-Dore.

What is the best time of year to cycle this route?

The best times to ride are from late spring to autumn. Early mornings are recommended in summer to avoid the heat. Be prepared for changing weather conditions due to the high altitude.

Where can I park to start the Tour of the Sancy?

The route typically starts from Le Mont-Dore, where you can find parking facilities. It's a convenient starting point for this loop tour.

Are there any permits or fees required to cycle in the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne?

Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for cycling on public roads and designated trails within the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning protected areas, and practice Leave No Trace principles.

Is the Tour of the Sancy route dog-friendly?

This is a road cycling route, so while dogs are generally allowed in the region, it's not typically considered 'dog-friendly' in the same way a hiking trail might be. If you plan to bring a dog, ensure they are safely secured in a bike trailer or carrier, and always keep them on a leash when off the bike, especially in villages or near livestock.

Does the route intersect with other cycling paths?

Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notably, it covers significant sections of the 'Autour du massif du Sancy - Tour du Sancy' (40%) and 'Boucle Longue du Sancy' (20%). You'll also find smaller segments overlapping with 'Capu’Dor', 'Chambourguet', and 'Tour des volcans et lacs d'Auvergne'.

Are there options for accommodation or splitting the ride?

Yes, for those who wish to split the effort, charming villages like La Godivelle offer gîtes (holiday cottages) and sometimes wild camping areas. Towns like Le Mont-Dore also provide various accommodation options.

What gear should I bring for road cycling this route?

Given the challenging nature and high altitude, bring a well-maintained road bike with appropriate gearing for climbs. Essential gear includes a helmet, sufficient water and nutrition, repair kit, spare tubes, and layers of clothing to adapt to changing weather. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also recommended.

Are there places to refuel or find cafes along the route?

Yes, the route passes through or near several picturesque villages and towns, such as Le Mont-Dore, where you can find cafes, restaurants, and shops to refuel. It's always a good idea to carry some snacks and water, especially on longer stretches between villages.

Are there any specific challenges or strategies for tackling this route?

The main challenge lies in the significant elevation gain and the numerous passes, such as the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert. A good strategy is to pace yourself on the climbs, carry enough hydration and nutrition, and be prepared for rapid weather changes at higher altitudes. Starting early in the day can help avoid heat and potential afternoon storms.

Warning: the D203 at the exit of La Tour d'Auvergne is very very busy. You should try to go through Sarcenat at the exit of La Tour d'Auvergne, there is a small road which then opens onto the D615 before Chastreix and which looks well tarmacked
