This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts from San Mauro Cilento. While specific trailhead parking isn't detailed, it's common for hikes in this region to begin near the village piazza. It's advisable to check local signage or inquire in the village for the most convenient parking spots.
Hikers can expect varied terrain, including paths through dense chestnut and oak forests, abandoned fields, and Mediterranean scrub. Some sections feature rocky formations and wooden steps. You might also encounter an old mule path. Long trousers and sturdy trekking shoes are recommended due to potential overgrown sections and rocky ground.
The route offers a rich blend of natural beauty and historical sites. Highlights include the Monte Stella Picnic Area, the Monte Stella Summit and Sanctuary with its 360-degree views, and the ancient Pietra del Mulacchio megalith. You'll also enjoy panoramic views of the Cilento coast, the Gulf of Salerno, and potentially the Amalfi Coast.
This trail is rated as moderate, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. While not for absolute beginners, those with some hiking experience and a reasonable fitness level should find it manageable. Some sections might be challenging due to elevation gain and varied terrain.
The best time to hike is generally during spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) when temperatures are milder and the scenery is vibrant. Summer can be hot, though the forest sections offer some shade. Always check the weather forecast before you go.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails within national parks in Italy, but they should be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Always carry water for your dog and be prepared to clean up after them.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or specific permits required for hiking the Monte Stella Loop or other trails within the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni. However, always respect park regulations regarding waste, noise, and wildlife.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other official trails. You will encounter parts of the Sentiero Perdifumo - Monte Stella, the Sentiero Sessa Cilento - Monte Stella, and the Via Gradinata Sorrentini along your journey.
Yes, there are equipped picnic areas, such as the Monte Stella Picnic Area and 'Acqua del Ceraso,' where you can rest and potentially refill water bottles. However, it's always wise to carry sufficient water for your entire hike.
You should bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and a first-aid kit. Given the varied terrain and potential for overgrown sections, long trousers and comfortable, sturdy trekking shoes are highly recommended. A map or GPS device is also useful for navigation.
While the trail is rated moderate, some paths can be hard to see or overgrown, especially during certain seasons. For a more comfortable experience, consider wearing long trousers to protect against scratches and ticks. Also, starting early in the morning allows you to enjoy the cooler temperatures and potentially clearer views before midday haze.
In April: wonderful spring flora, panoramic view from the Castelluccio. Highly recommended.
A stony path led up, past a beautiful Vesperplatz, through a small Grove and then a few meters over a road. Then we continued through a piece of forest, past old dolmens and then up to the restricted area at Montestella. The descent then was very steep and not for people with knee pain. So we changed the route and walked downhill on the road for a little longer, in order to manage the rest on our ascent path.
