Embark on an exhilarating journey with steep climbs, thrilling descents, nature reserves, breathtaking viewpoints and incredible panoramas of the Sussex and Hampshire countryside.
From Petersfield station, you'll venture northward to Ashfield Hanger. This national nature reserve is nestled within a woodland of beech, ash, and yew trees, thriving on the steep chalk hillsides. Continue your expedition to the charming village of West Meon, where you'll join a section of the Meon Valley Trail. This former railway bed runs alongside the tranquil Meon River.
Prepare for an invigorating ascent as you climb Old Winchester Hill, leading you to another nature reserve teeming with vibrant bird and butterfly life.
Next on your journey is Butser Hill, the highest point on the South Downs Way at 889 feet (271 m). Descend sharply along a wide, open grassy bridleway before approaching the outskirts of the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. From here, you'll cycle back into Petersfield along a traffic-free path that traverses a chalk cutting alongside the A3.
The route takes in a significant section of the South Downs Way between Old Winchester Hill and the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. This also overlaps with part of King Alfred's Way, a long-distance, historic bikepacking cycling loop.
On this route, you'll predominantly encounter chalk bridleways, gravel paths and compact earth surfaces, with 60% of the journey leading you off-road. Be prepared for some steep climbs and a few bumpy sections along the way. To enjoy this adventure, I’d recommend opting for a mountain or gravel bike equipped with a good range of gears.
There are plenty of places to stop for food along the way. Around the halfway point, you'll encounter the Thomas Lord pub in West Meon. Additionally, the village boasts a local shop featuring a cafe. For a quick pick-me-up and stunning views, don't miss the Butser Roundhouse Cafe, a small kiosk-style outlet located at the top of Butser Hill. Alternatively, as you enter The Queen Elizabeth Country Park, there's the Beechwood Kitchen, which offers a wider range of food options. Petersfield also has cafes and supermarkets should you wish to stock up before you set off.
Petersfield station is served by trains from London Waterloo, Clapham Junction and Portsmouth Harbour. If driving, you can park in Woodbury Avenue just off Bell Hill north of the station.
