View of Linlithgow Palace from Linlithgow Loch

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Linlithgow Loch is a shallow freshwater loch which is interesting as an example of how lakes can adapt to eutrophication. Over the years high levels of agricultural run off has entered the loch creating algal blooms. It's now a SSSI as a lowland eutrophic loch which supports representative examples of aquatic and emergent plant communities.
There is a nice trail around the loch to walk with great views of the castle.

Trail Reviews

Wandering Cloud
July 23, 2021, Scottish National Trail - Day 6 add-on: Linlithgow Loch

This is an addition to Day 6, but not exactly on the trail. Linlithgow Loch is very pretty and it pays to walk around it - less than 3 miles - to get lovely views of the Linlithgow Castle on one of its sides and of the apparently man-made islands that used to have piers running to them from the shores. This is simply a stroll, of course, rather than a hike.
