The trail is approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) long and generally takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete. However, allow extra time for enjoying the scenery and wildlife spotting.
The Ness of Burravoe Trail is classified as moderate. While much of it is relatively flat, hikers should be prepared for sections that can be quite boggy due to thick peat, even in summer. The path includes grassy coastal areas, rocky terrain, and a section of shingle (pebbles). There is also one steep ascent, particularly after passing Ladies Hole, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness.
You'll encounter several notable features, including the starting point at Burravoe Pier and Marina, the impressive natural sea arch known as The Horse of Burravoe Arch, and the dramatic crescent-shaped cove of Ladies Hol Cliffs. You'll also see views of the township of Burravoe, its Manor House, and historical peat cuttings.
The trail is excellent for wildlife spotting. Keep an eye out for otters and seals along the seashore, especially at Whal Wick. From May through August, Ladies Hol Cliffs becomes a vibrant breeding ground for numerous seabirds, including puffins, kittiwakes, arctic terns, guillemots, razorbills, and fulmars. Various wading birds can also be seen near the shore in summer.
The best time to hike is generally from May through August, especially if you're interested in seeing the abundant seabirds nesting at Ladies Hol Cliffs. Be aware that even in summer, some sections can be boggy, so appropriate footwear is essential.
The trail conveniently starts at the Burravoe Marina. There is a car park available at the marina, along with other facilities.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given the presence of wildlife, especially nesting seabirds during breeding season (May-August), and potential livestock in surrounding areas, it is crucial to keep dogs on a leash at all times to protect both your pet and the local fauna.
No, there are no permits required or entrance fees to hike the Ness of Burravoe Trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, the starting point at Burravoe Marina provides toilets and camping facilities. After your hike, you can visit the nearby Old Haa, a 17th-century merchant's house that now functions as a local history museum, art gallery, tea room, and craft shop.
Yes, the route primarily follows the Ness of Burravoe trail (68% of the route) but also includes sections of the Neapaback Burravoe trail (20% of the route).
Intensive walk with surprisingly changing conditions. We saw a number of puffins and gannets near the horse. Beautiful to see those small active animals 😁
