Mountain biking

Set out on a thrilling expedition that showcases enchanting woodland, steep but gradual climbs, thundering grassy descents, a quaint hill top village and a short section of the South Downs Way with views for miles.

The Tour begins with a climb on to the downs ridge, which rewards with a long open descent along the side of a private racecourse. This eventually leads to a shady forest in Angmering Woods, followed by a gradual climb to the quaint village of Burpham.

You'll complete a short segment of the South Downs Way between Amberley Mount and Rackham Hill and briefly intersect with the Monarch's Way, a historical hiking route.

Two-thirds of the route is off-road, but these surfaces are generally good with relatively compact gravel or short grass. It's a good introduction to off-road cycling with little technical skill required. A gravel or mountain bike is ideal for this Tour.

Along the latter half of the route, you'll come across two charming pubs. The first is The George at Burpham, a 17th-century local pub with benches at the front. At the end of your journey, you'll pass by The Bridge Inn in Amberley, a traditional country pub that sits snugly between the River Arun and the railway line. You won't find any supermarkets, but there are plenty of spots for a picnic if you bring your own provisions.

The loop begins and concludes at Amberley station, where you'll find half-hourly trains serving London Victoria, East Croydon, and Bognor Regis. Conveniently, there's also a bike hire centre located just across from the station on the banks of the River Arun. A 24-hour car park at the station offers free parking all year round.

View from Amberley Mount

Highlight • Summit

The summit of Amberley Mount is around 660 feet (200 m) above sea level, and offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Isle of Wight to the south and the North Downs to the north. It's one of the toughest climbs on the South Downs Way (from west to east).

There's a gate off the main path leading to an open grassy area where you can stop for a picnic and admire the views over Amberley Brooks.

Angmering Woods

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

Part of Angmering Park Estate, Angmering Woods are nestled between the towns of Arundel and Worthing just north of the A27. The area features a network of snaking woodland bridleways and is renowned for its dense swathes of bluebells which bloom here during April.

The village of Burpham is built on the side of Perry Hill to avoid the risk of flooding from the River Arun.

Next to St Mary's Church is a grassy viewpoint with benches overlooking the Arun valley. It's a peaceful spot with beautiful west-facing views, offering an ideal location for watching the sunset.

Just around the corner is The George pub, a 17th-century gem in the heart of the village.
