Lakes Circular cycle trail — Llyn Brenig

Gravel riding

Whereas the Two Lakes cycle trail takes in both reservoirs, heading around the outer edges of each, the Lakes Circular cycle trail takes in the shores of both Llyn Brenig and Alwen Reservoir in a shorter loop, suitable for less experienced legs or riders with more of a time pressure.

Start in the same direction as the other routes, towards the Brenig Dam, but turn right to take the short climb up to the main road entrance to Llyn Brenig. Crossing the main road carefully, you head straight onto sleepy forest singletrack, riding on a bed of pine needles as you head west.

Fingerposts direct you onto a thrilling gravel fire road descent, cornering and turning until you reach the Alwen Dam at the shore of the reservoir.

Enjoy the views across the water as you follow the gravel road along the northern shore of Alwen Reservoir, passing between the trees. When you reach the junction at the end, turn right to ride up some farm tracks, between grazing fields, and then onto a singletrack bridleway through Hafod Elwy Moor nature reserve.

The trail leads you back into the woodland on the other side of the moorland track, across the main road, and straight on between pines before veering right to reach the shore of Llyn Brenig.

Finish the ride by cycling down the western shore of Llyn Brenig, taking care when you reach the road, as traffic exiting the visitor centre will be approaching from the opposite direction on the one-way system.

Llyn Brenig Visitor Centre

Highlight • Rest Area

The visitor centre at Llyn Brenig is open all year round, with extended hours during the fishing season.

There's an adventure playground, picnic area, cafe, osprey exhibition, gift shop, public toilets and a wide range of activities available. The cafe boasts amazing views over Llyn Brenig thanks to the large glass wall and balcony.

For the seven cycle routes on offer here, there's also bike hire offered within the same building, as well as a bike wash facility.

Llyn Brenig

Highlight • Viewpoint

You can find some glorious views here on the edge of Llyn Brenig. Llyn is Welsh for lake.

The dam is fairly recent; it was begun in 1973 and finished in 1976. It maintains the flow of water to the River Dee, not to be confused with the river of the same name in Aberdeenshire.

The water supplied by this reservoir feeds into North-East Wales and North-West England, including the Liverpool area.

The views over Alwen Reservoir from this section along the northern shore are simply wonderful! You'll take them in if you follow the waymarked Alwen or Lakes Circular routes.

You move between open views and between the trees, but both are pretty spectacular, especially at sunset.

A quieter stretch of bridleway connecting the Brenig and Alwen reservoirs. The track is relatively smooth and quite flat, though can sometimes be pretty muddy after rain.
