Hiking

Embark on the Bath Skyline loop, a moderate 7.4-mile (12.0 km) hike that offers ever-changing, panoramic vistas of Bath's iconic Georgian architecture and the winding River Avon. This route, with 575 feet (175 metres) of elevation gain, guides you through ancient woodlands, open meadows, and varied terrain including steep hills and rocky sections. You'll encounter the quirky 18th-century folly of Sham Castle, providing excellent photo opportunities with the city as a backdrop, all while enjoying a unique "countryside in the city" experience over approximately 3 hours and 17 minutes.

You can easily access the trail from Bath Spa Station, with the official start point at Bathwick Hill and Cleveland Walk, about 0.8 miles (1.3 km) away. To reach it, walk from the station by turning left into York Street from Bath Abbey, crossing to North Parade, and following the canal path. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Bath Bus Station and alight at Cleveland Walk. Sturdy footwear is highly recommended due to the varied terrain, which includes roads, surfaced paths, and potentially slippery or muddy sections.

This loop provides unparalleled views of historic Bath, especially its honey-coloured stone buildings and Bath Abbey, vistas said to have inspired figures like Jane Austen. The route passes through diverse ecosystems, from ancient woodlands like Smallcombe Wood to limestone grassland slopes rich in wildflowers. You might even spot an Iron Age fort on Little Solsbury Hill from certain points along the way. Managed by the National Trust, the trail ensures its upkeep and offers a chance to experience nature close to the city.

Kennet and Avon Canal (Bath Section)

Highlight (Segment) • River

The Kennet & Avon Canal is one of our most well-loved waterways. The 87 mile long canal links London with the Bristol Channel, and passes through some spectacular landscapes including West Berkshire and the rolling Cotswolds. But this haven in southern England faced closure in the last century and was only brought back to life thanks to the tireless dedication of volunteers.

Sham Castle is a folly built for Ralph Allen to improve the views from his house in Bath. It was built in 1762.
The castle has great views across Bath and is visited on the wonderful Bath Skyline walk.

The Mole Hill

Highlight • Rest Area

The coffee cart is found in a field just off the Bath Skyline walk near the popular Rainbow Woods. Grab a coffee and a cake and take it for a stroll or sit and enjoy it on one of the hay bales provided as seating.
It's normally open weekends from 10:00 - 16:00 but is a bit weather dependent so don't absolutely bank on it.

Trail Reviews

Eisbär 🐻‍❄
August 22, 2024, 2024-08-22 EN Bath (Skyline Walk)

Bath is the English equivalent of Baden-Baden. (Although its German twin city is Braunschweig 🤷‍♂️). England's only hot springs produce plenty of warm water at around 45°C, which has a slightly sulfurous smell and a musty taste. The Romans appreciated this and built a large bathing complex here. After the obligatory visit to the tourist-packed Roman baths (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no less) and the associated museum, my credit card (entrance fee £27) was a little lighter and my brain a little heavier. Some exercise was in order! The National Trust offers the "Bath Skyline Walk" for this purpose. It's about 10 km along beautiful forest paths, with occasional views and large, green meadows. A well-signposted English footpath at its finest. In picture 12, you can see "Solsbury Hill" (a proud 191 m high) slightly to the left of center. For those who don't immediately recognize it, here's a reminder: https://youtu.be/_OO2PuGz-H8?si=hAK1yTHoaOQQKaTD

A very varied hike through fairytale-like overgrown forests, along meadows and pastures and narrow sunken paths. The path initially (and a little in between) goes uphill. In wet weather the ground is slippery and muddy and not so easy to walk on because of tree roots. However, this should not bother experienced hikers. For the most part it is shady. It is advisable to walk the circuit clockwise, so you have the most beautiful view of Bath at the end of the tour.
