Loch of Skene

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Loch of Skene is a medium sized freshwater loch. It was artificially enlarged by partially damming the outflow. The loch was used to power the tweed mill downstream, but this stopped in 1906. Since then, the water has been used to generate electricity.
It is designated as an SSSI for the wildlife in the area.

Fraser Mausoleum, Cluny Churchyard

Highlight • Historical Site

The mausoleum was built in 1808 by James Byres in memory of Elyza Fraser. It is a large drum with a dome and oculus. It was built using very fine ashlar granite and has a frieze with the inscription ELIZABETH FRASER OF CASTLE FRASER MDCCC VIII. The single doorway is architraved and topped by a coat of arms and foliage swags, all in finely-carved stone. The elaborate metal gate in front of the door is locally said to be made from internal screens saved from the old church at Cluny before it was demolished in 1789.
