The Drovers Trail is similar to the short Fort Trail, but adds an extra loop out to High Paradise Farm on the Cleveland Way and back via the traffic-free Hambleton Road and then Cleveland Road.

Unlike the long Fort Trail, the Drovers Trail isn’t particularly technical, nor does it add a huge amount of extra climbing, so it’s a great option for riders looking for a slightly longer ride without getting too gnarly! It’s also a great loop to tackle on a gravel bike or rigid mountain bike.

The major bonus of the Drovers Trail is where it takes you. High Paradise Farm is nothing less than an oasis in this open, wild landscape, with tearooms and camping on offer from the glorious stone farmstead.

The stretch along the Cleveland Way past the derelict High Barn looking out over farmland below and the Yorkshire Dales in the distance is a real treat.

Sutton Bank Bikes Shop & Bike Wash

Highlight • Rest Area

Great shop located at the visitor centre for the Sutton Bank bike trails, where you'll also find a cafe, toilets and parking.

Managed to slip me in for a quick brake bleed when I got to the top and realised my front brake was a bit spongy.

Very helpful staff and a great variety of products/bikes.

A great stretch of cycle trail that's well surfaced around the margin of the field, adjacent to the road. This forms part of the Sutton Bank Fort and Paradise trails, rated blue and red respectively.

Look out for wildlife as you pass by the fields; I was joined by two partridges as I rode along this track.

High Paradise Farm Tearoom

Highlight • Cafe

High Paradise Farm is a traditional 16th century hill farm that’s diversified. They have a great little tearoom as well as camping, self-catering accommodation, and an event or wedding venue.

The tearoom serves hot and cold food and snacks, they use the produce from the farm and local suppliers and cook or bake everything on site.

Tearoom open seasonally, in the winter they are open at the weekend 10:00 - 16:00.

The Cleveland Way is a long distance hiking trail stretching from Helmsley and ending in Filey, circling the North York Moors National Park (komoot.com/collection/888432/hike-empty-hills-majestic-moors-and-golden-coast-cleveland-way).

In some sections you can ride along the way too, like here where it's on a bridleway. While this section is fairly wide, take care on busier summer days when there are plenty of walkers, horse riders and other cyclists on the Cleveland Way.

This is the point where you can turn right for the longer Fort route (blue) and Paradise trail (red), or turn sharp left to head back to the visitor centre and car park on the shorter blue loop. It's well worth pausing here a while because the views to the east are absolutely incredible.

If you're following bridleways rather than the marked cycle routes, there's a handy fingerpost here with directions.

High on Whitestone Cliff, on part of the classic Cleveland Way trail, you are rewarded with spectacular views over Gormire Lake and miles beyond. If you are exploring Garbutt Wood Nature Reserve and the lake from below, it's worth a stroll to the cliff tops for the views. You won’t regret it.

The final section of the Paradise and Fort trails from Sutton Bank leads you through Cliff Plantation. It's a twisty single track trail, though not technical and well surfaced, leading right to the car park.

Bike ride from Sutton Bank visitor centre to High Paradise Farm and back.

Awful weather, felt like child cruelty at times. Definitely character building!

I know this route is lovely in good clear weather.

We hired a bike trailer from the visitor centre so that the boys had some protection from the wind and rain, which was a great move.
