Wooden boardwalks through the High Fens

Purely geologically, the High Fens is neither part of the Northern Eifel nor the Ardennes, even if both are said again and again. It forms the core of a large, …

Dead Trees of the Hautes Fagnes Moor

Wonderful view over the Hohe Venn. Picturesque boardwalks lead you safely over the moorland, then it goes on narrow paths through the beautiful landscape.

August 16, 2025,Durch das Wallonische Venn
Just like "recently" in Dartmoor and even more recently in Fanal on Madeira, we once again chose a foggy day for our moorland hike.
An atmospheric trip through the Walloon Fens to Noir Flohay – the Ghost Forest.
The raised bog is part of the High Fens (600 km², of which 133 km² is in Germany).

In my opinion, the Walloon Fens is a superlative fen landscape. A wide, seemingly endless fen landscape, garnished with partly untouched nature trails, a more beautiful fen landscape cannot present itself to the hiker. A pleasure for the senses and for those who appreciate the beauty of the Fagnes.
Conclusion:
One of my top hiking recommendations (*suitable footwear essential), which …

The second tour of the day started on Belgium's highest mountain. A small hill was specially created here to get to the 700 m:

The tour itself went through the beautiful High Fens. Sturdy, waterproof shoes are highly recommended. 😉
For dinner afterwards, we went to Baraque Michel, only a few kilometers away, from where some very beautiful hikes …

Today we were hiking in the Walloon Fens in eastern Belgium. The landscape was very diverse, with a surprising amount of water...there were real rivers. The only disappointment was the last 4 km, of which about 2.7 km were stubbornly straight on a wide path, and the remaining stretch was also a straight, wide path.

We have been to the High Fens (today the Walloon Fens) very often.
I love it, like that too
Brackvenn 😍.
Today we started from Signal de Botrange.
I really wanted to go to Noir Flohay again, I think the landscape and above all the bizarre trees are just awesome.
Even in rainy and cloudy weather, the view and the …

Wonderful tour this morning in the Fens. The detour to Noir Flohay was very muddy, but otherwise wonderful. You sit there and hear nothing but a woodpecker.

Over the extended weekend, we spontaneously drove to the neighboring country.
More precisely to Waimes in the High Fens.
We have been to the High Fens several times before, but we usually came here between the years.
There you don't see a green leaf or beautiful vegetation.
We wanted to change that.
