Running

Yr Wyddfa's (Snowdon's) south ridge is known as the Connoisseur’s Route, taking in 1.2 miles (2 km) of stunning rocky ridgeline en route to the summit. It’s even better when combined with a descent of the Watkin path, creating a memorable run on the southern flanks of Wales' highest mountain.

This is a terrific route, but also one of the most challenging on the mountain. Starting at about 164 feet (50 m) above sea level in the picturesque Nantgwynant valley, there’s more ascent than any of the other main summit routes. Both the ascent of the South Ridge and the top section of the Watkin path descent involve steep, rocky sections; the South Ridge may require some hands-on scrambling, with plenty of exposure. Relatively achievable in dry, calm conditions, it's a serious undertaking in poor weather. Under winter conditions this is a mountaineering route requiring specific skills and equipment and shouldn’t be attempted at a run.

Start at the large marker stone at the start of the Watkin path, ascending through ancient oak woodland and onto the mountainside. The South Ridge begins at Bwlch Cwm Llan, scrambly at first but getting less technical as you climb higher. The ridge is great, narrow with awesome views but never actually very hard.

The summit stretch joins the Rhyd-Ddu path, traversing the narrow Bwlch Main ridge to the summit of Yr Wyddfa. From here, the descent takes in the rocky ridgeline to Bwlch Ciliau, following the Watkin path downhill back into Cwm Llan.

This route is served by the Sherpa bus from Porthmadog, alighting at the Pont Bethania bus stop. If you choose to drive there's plenty of parking at the start of the route. Please use the paid parking at Pont Bethania Snowdonia National Park car park, which helps maintain the paths you’re running on.

The Hafod Y Llan National Trust campsite is close to the start of this route, a lovely place to stay and very handy for exploring the area. For kit, cafes, pubs, supplies and more accommodation choice Beddgelert is closest. There aren’t any refreshment stops on this run except for the summit café, which is open seasonally, so take food and drinks with you. It’s always worth carrying emergency kit on a mountain run, including a warm layer, emergency bivi bag, small first aid kit, torch, whistle and compass.

Gladstone Rock

Highlight • Monument

The Watkin Path, named after its creator Edward Watkin (a friend of Gladstone’s), was the first designated footpath in Britain. At the time of its construction, there was no path to the actual summit of Snowdon, only a path just over a quarter of the way up to a quarry.

Over 2,000 people gathered here on the side of Snowdon in 1892 to witness Gladstone opening the Watkin Path. From on top of an impressive 12 foot (3.6 m) boulder, the Prime Minister delivered a speech on Justice for Wales, not to mention sung some ‘Cymric hymns’ himself.

A plaque fitted to the front of the boulder commemorates what was sure to have been a memorable occasion, announcing that indeed William Gladstone had stood upon the rock.

Allt Maenderyn (South Ridge of Snowdon)

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

This is the secluded and wild side of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). Its relative tranquillity is not because of the quality of the hiking (which is superb), but because it takes you away from the honeypots of Llanberis and the Pen-y-Pass towards the quieter pastures of Rhyd-Ddu and Nantgwynant.

Allt Maenderyn — often referred to as the south ridge — makes for a sublime, airy ridge walk that doesn't quite qualify as scrambling territory. The arête makes for a magnificent hike though, with shapely Yr Aran, bulky Moel Hebog and the sinuous Crib Nantlle (Nantlle Ridge) all forming the backdrop.

Snowdon Summit (Yr Wyddfa)

Highlight • Summit

Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is perhaps the most ascended mountain in the world, and with good reason. This is a majestic mountain, as is befitting of Wales' highest point.

Its glory lies in the myriad routes to the summit. There's everything from the gentle inclines of the Llanberis path to the knife-edged arête of Crib Goch. The south side of the mountain is generally quieter, with the South Ridge in particular a fine route up. The Miners' and Pyg Tracks are straightforward, classic approaches that enter the incredible natural amphitheatre that holds Llyn Llydaw and Glaslyn.

To get the summit to yourself, rise early and avoid peak season.
