S464 Gravel Bike Tour around the Sarstein

From Bad Goisern you have a good view of the 1,975 meter high Sarstein, the main actor of this tour. Your plan for today is to circle this mountain and experience Styria and Upper Austria from their most beautiful side. For around 46 kilometers you drive along streams through romantic forests to dramatically kitschy views of mountains and lakes. Whether as a stream, a river or a lake: Today, water is your constant companion.

After a short, flat warm-up, you get down to business and a long climb awaits you, which takes you over the initially paved, later gravel Leislingstraße to an altitude of over 900 meters. Shortly before you reach the small town of Oberlupitsch, you roll past impressive rock faces over light gray gravel - mountain feeling at its finest and made for gravel bikes. A relaxed descent towards Altaussee follows. Here you have a great view of the lake, the town of the same name and the Loser, the impressive local mountain in the background. A detour to the village or to the lake shore is worthwhile - an excellent opportunity for a break and a small snack.

You then continue to Koppental via Bad Aussee. Here you first follow the Koppenstraße, but then turn onto a gravel path that takes you far away from traffic along the Koppentraun shore in the direction of Lake Hallstatt. Before you return to Bad Goisern via the Ostuferweg, a stop in the World Heritage town of Obertraun is worthwhile. Surrounded by the high mountains, the place offers a great backdrop for a little refreshment. From here it is not far to the cooling waters of the lake. The last few kilometers are pure enjoyment: you always enjoy a great view along Lake Hallstatt - a cool-down program that couldn't be nicer.
