The trail typically starts from the charming village of Foce di Montemonaco, which serves as a common departure point for many excursions in the Monti Sibillini National Park. You can find parking available in Foce di Montemonaco.
This hike is generally considered to have a moderate difficulty, classified as 'E' for experienced hikers. The initial ascent through the 'il canale' section is quite steep and demanding, requiring good physical preparation. Sure-footedness and sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended.
The ideal time to visit is during April and May. This is when the ephemeral Laghetto di Palazzo Borghese forms after the winter snowmelt, typically lasting only about 40 days. Spring also offers vibrant floral blooms along the route, adding to the scenic beauty.
The terrain is varied. It begins on a service road, transitioning into a steep path known as Il Canale Stream, which can be exposed. You'll then enter a dense beech forest, providing shade, though the path can be narrow. After the forest, the terrain opens up to panoramic meadows and rocky areas, with the final approach to the lake within a glacial-karst basin. Be aware of a risk of falling stones in the initial canal section.
As this trail is located within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini, dogs are generally permitted but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Always check the latest regulations from the park authority before your visit.
Currently, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for general hiking on this trail within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini. However, it's always a good idea to check the official park website for any updated regulations or special requirements before your trip.
Beyond the ephemeral Laghetto di Palazzo Borghese itself, you'll pass through the challenging Il Canale Stream. Higher up, you'll be rewarded with a View of the Valley Below Pian delle Cavalle and panoramic vistas extending towards Castelluccio, Monte Porche, Sibilla, and the Vettore mountain group. The imposing rock face of Sasso di Palazzo Borghese also dominates the landscape.
The lake is unique because it is 'ephemeral,' meaning it only exists seasonally after the winter snowmelt, typically for about 40 days. It's also home to a rare and delicate species of small branchiopod crustacean, the 'Chirocephalus Sibyllae,' which completes its entire life cycle during the lake's brief existence.
Due to the significant elevation gain and the steep, demanding initial section through 'il canale,' this trail is generally not recommended for beginners or families with young children. It's classified as moderate and requires good physical fitness and sure-footedness.
Given the varied terrain and potential for changing conditions, you should pack sturdy hiking shoes, layers of clothing (including rain gear), sufficient water, snacks, a map or GPS device (as signage can be discontinuous), and sun protection. Trekking poles can be helpful for the steep sections.
There are generally no dedicated restrooms or natural water sources available directly along the trail itself. It's advisable to use facilities in Foce di Montemonaco before starting your hike and to carry all the water you will need for the duration of the trip.
All going uphill and back downhill but x the view of the lake is worth it, today too bad the weather
The route does not require particular equipment, snowshoes are recommended..but to keep in mind the hike of 950m uphill from the beginning of the route, therefore adequate physical fitness is required. Consideration: as with all excursions above 1500mt... in May 2023 at the beginning of the journey we were at 17 degrees, on the lake at 1 degree altitude (perceived much less) with haze and fog due to clouds present (not infrequent in the area). .. I accused hypothermia in my hands not equipped because I didn't expect it, quickly descended by 500m solved..evaluate..although very popular route, the weather conditions and the period.
