Great tour. However, you need good hiking boots, surefootedness and it's not for people who are afraid of heights. You should do the tour early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.

Strenuous but beautiful tour. The hiking trail is already demanding. Drink plenty of water and take regular breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difficulty and terrain like on the Devils Garden Primitive Trail Loop?

This trail is considered strenuous, especially the primitive loop section. While the initial mile to Landscape Arch is well-groomed, beyond that, you'll encounter rugged terrain requiring scrambling over slickrock, navigating narrow rock fins, and ascending steep sandstone slabs. Route-finding skills are important, as signs and cairns can be sparse on the primitive sections. It's not recommended for those with a fear of heights or when rocks are wet or icy.

How long does it typically take to hike this trail?

The full loop, including side trails to various arches, typically ranges from 7.2 to 8.9 miles and can take anywhere from 3 to 6.5 hours to complete. Your pace and how much time you spend exploring spur trails will influence the total duration.

What natural arches and features can I see along the way?

The trail is renowned for its concentration of arches. You can see up to eight or more, including the impressive Landscape Arch (North America's longest), the unique Double O Arch, Navajo Arch, and Partition Arch. Shorter spur trails lead to Pine Tree Arch and Tunnel Arch. You can also visit Black Arch Overlook and the spire known as Dark Angel.

Where is the trailhead and what are the parking options?

The trailhead for the Devils Garden Primitive Trail Loop is located at the very end of the main scenic drive in Arches National Park, at the Devils Garden Trailhead. Parking is available at the trailhead, but it fills up very early, especially during peak season. Arriving early in the morning is highly recommended to secure a spot.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for Arches National Park?

Yes, Arches National Park requires an entrance fee. Additionally, from April 1 to October 31, a timed entry reservation is required to enter the park between 7 AM and 4 PM. You can find more details and make reservations on the official NPS website: nps.gov.

Is the Devils Garden Primitive Trail Loop dog-friendly?

No, dogs are generally not allowed on hiking trails in Arches National Park, including the Devils Garden Primitive Trail Loop. Pets are permitted only on paved roads, in parking lots, and in the campground.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) offer the most pleasant hiking conditions with moderate temperatures. Summer can be extremely hot, making early morning starts essential. Winter hiking is possible, but be prepared for cold temperatures, potential snow, and icy conditions on slickrock, which can make the primitive sections hazardous.

What should I bring or wear for this hike?

Given the trail's length and ruggedness, bring plenty of water (especially in warmer months), sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and snacks. Layers are advisable for changing weather. A map and compass or GPS device are also recommended for navigation on the primitive sections.

Does this trail connect with other paths?

Is this trail suitable for families or beginners?

The initial mile to Landscape Arch is relatively easy and suitable for most. However, the full primitive loop is challenging and not recommended for beginners or young children due to the strenuous terrain, scrambling, and potential exposure to heights. Consider your group's experience and comfort level before attempting the full loop.

What's an insider tip for hiking the Devils Garden Primitive Trail Loop?

To avoid the worst of the heat and secure parking, aim to start your hike as early as possible in the morning, especially during peak season or warmer months. This also allows you to experience some solitude before the crowds arrive.
