Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Palmaria Island to start the hike?

Palmaria Island is easily accessible by boat from Portovenere year-round. Ferries depart regularly, making it convenient to reach the island and begin your hike.

Where can I park when visiting Palmaria Island?

Since Palmaria Island is only accessible by ferry, you will need to park in Portovenere. There are parking options available in Portovenere, though it's advisable to check for availability, especially during peak season. From Portovenere, you can take the short ferry ride to the island.

What is the best time of year to hike the Ring of Palmaria Island?

The trail offers a rewarding experience throughout the year. Spring is particularly beautiful with vibrant Mediterranean vegetation and golden yellow broom. Clear days in any season can offer extensive panoramic views, even reaching Corsica. Consider avoiding the hottest summer months if you prefer cooler hiking conditions.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Palmaria Island trail or the Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Venere?

As of now, there is no specific permit or entrance fee required to hike the trails on Palmaria Island or to enter the Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Venere. However, you will need to pay for the ferry service to reach the island from Portovenere.

Is the Ring of Palmaria Island trail suitable for beginners?

The trail is generally considered of moderate difficulty. While the initial section from Palmaria dock is relatively easy, the southern part, especially from Pozzale, features steeper ascents and descents. Hikers should be sure-footed and have good fitness for these more challenging sections. There are also options for a more relaxed "Gentle & Panoramic Walk" if you prefer a less strenuous experience.

What is the terrain like on the Palmaria Island loop?

The terrain is varied, consisting of a mix of natural trails, dirt roads, gravel, and some paved or asphalt sections. You'll encounter gradual ascents, particularly towards the east passing military structures, and steeper sections, especially in the southern part of the island from Pozzale, which run along the edge of the sea.

What are the main sights and viewpoints along the Ring of Palmaria Island trail?

The trail offers numerous highlights. You'll enjoy the View of Pozzale Bay, reach the Palmaria Island Summit (180 m), and experience the stunning View of Portovenere from Palmaria Island. Other notable features include historical military structures, ancient Portoro marble quarries, and panoramic views of the Gulf of La Spezia, Tino Island, and sometimes even Corsica.

Does the Ring of Palmaria Island trail connect with other paths?

Yes, the route primarily follows the "Isola Palmaria (giro dell'isola)" path, which encircles the island. It also intersects with sections of other official trails such as "Isola Palmaria (strada dei condannati)", "Pozzale – Grotta dei Colombi", and "Collegamento 510-511", offering opportunities for exploration or alternative routes.

Is the Ring of Palmaria Island trail dog-friendly?

Information regarding dogs on the specific trail is not explicitly stated in the provided sources. However, as a general rule for protected natural areas in Italy, dogs are often allowed on trails but must be kept on a leash. It's always best to check local regulations or signage upon arrival at the Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Venere for the most current rules regarding pets.

Are there any facilities or water sources along the trail?

While the trail passes by areas like Pozzale, which may have seasonal facilities, it's generally recommended to carry sufficient water and snacks for the duration of your hike. There are no guaranteed water refill stations directly on the trail itself. Portovenere, before you take the ferry, offers various cafes and shops.

What unique historical or natural features can I expect to see?

Beyond the stunning views, you'll encounter numerous historical military constructions, remnants of ancient Portoro marble quarries, and the highest point on the island, Torretta (186m). The island is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, rich in biodiversity with unique plant species and various birds. Geological wonders include the Grotta Azzurra and the paleontologically significant Grotta dei Colombi.

October 21, 2025, Cinque Terre • 3: Um die Insel Palmaria 🤩🐐

The journey by 🚌 to Porto Venere from La Spezia Centrale train station was quite interesting, as it led for miles past military forts of the Italian Navy on the Gulf of La Spezia. We also saw the large warships moored there. From Porto Venere, we took a small ferry to the island of Palmaria. At just under 2 km², Palmaria is the largest island in Liguria and, due to its location at the entrance to the Gulf of La Spezia, is of military importance. We heard this in the form of cannon shots overhead. 😁 Besides a few ruined fortresses and still-used military buildings, there are a few private homes and plenty of wild nature. 😊 Hiking is permitted on the island. There are no longer any places to stop for refreshments in the fall. Besides four other hikers, we encountered many free-roaming goats. 🐐 The views from the island across the sea, to the mainland, and to the neighboring island of Tino are breathtakingly beautiful. 🤩 At 🌞, the colors are simply magnificent. The paths here resemble the mountain trails on the mainland. Strictly speaking, the island is no longer part of the Cinque Terre, but it lies at the end of the associated peninsula. We really enjoyed it. 👌

Both Portovenere and Palmaria island are gems... But, in terms of cleaning maintenance, they make themselves desired... Another consideration, when you're in those places, you think you're eating fresh fish, instead... it's not like that.. I am referring to the inn located on the Palmaria island...

Really nice trip. You need to have good shoes and plenty of water. Lots of climbs, not particularly difficult.... I recommend you take this route in spring and autumn.

I don't understand komoot...I walked for at least 2 hours at a calm pace, I certainly didn't run

We left counterclockwise at 11. At the top we stayed an hour visiting the garden and enjoying the island at 360 degrees. We arrived in Terrizzo at 3.30 pm with a stop for lunch in Pozzale. The time taken is longer ... I don't know how the app calculates it.

Today excursion in Liguria, Palmaria island with the cai. Simple suitable for everyone. Except for a couple of spots where it was almost necessary to sit down

With my friend on the motorboat from La Spezia, I didn't want to miss the opportunity of the circular hike. Short but crisp round with great viewpoints.
