The hike from Corniglia to Manarola via Porciana is approximately 12 kilometers long and generally takes about 2.5 to 4.5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views. Our data suggests an average duration of around 4 hours and 43 minutes.
This trail is considered moderate to intermediate. It requires good physical fitness and sure-footedness due to significant elevation changes, including steep ascents and descents, and uneven paths. The initial climb from Corniglia is less steep than starting from Manarola, making this direction often recommended.
You'll encounter a varied terrain, including natural and hiking trails, footpaths, and some unpaved sections. There are also steep sections with stairs, particularly at the beginning from Corniglia and during the descent into Manarola. Paths can be narrow and uneven in places, becoming asphalt in village areas.
This route offers breathtaking scenery. You'll pass through centuries-old terraced vineyards high above the sea, enjoy stunning coastal views, and experience panoramic glimpses of the Mediterranean. Key highlights include the View of Corniglia, the View of Porciana Gardens and the Sea, and the View of Manarola as you descend.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on trails within the Cinque Terre National Park, including this route. However, they must be kept on a leash. Be prepared for steep sections and stairs, which might be challenging for some dogs.
Yes, to access the hiking trails in the Cinque Terre National Park, you typically need a Cinque Terre Card. This card can be purchased at visitor centers in any of the Cinque Terre villages or online. It covers access to the trails and often includes unlimited train travel between the villages. For current prices and options, check the official park website or visitcinqueterre.eu.
The best times to hike in Cinque Terre are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the weather is pleasant, temperatures are mild, and the trails are less crowded than in the peak summer months. Summer can be very hot, and some trails may close due to heat or fire risk. Winter can be rainy, making paths slippery.
Parking is very limited in Corniglia and other Cinque Terre villages. It's highly recommended to use public transport, such as the train, to reach Corniglia. The trailhead in Corniglia is easily accessible from the village center. If driving is necessary, look for parking outside the villages and use shuttle buses or trains to reach your starting point.
The direct coastal 'Blue Trail' (Sentiero Azzurro) between Corniglia and Manarola has been closed for an extended period due to landslides. This route via Porciana and Volastra serves as the primary and highly recommended alternative. It offers a more challenging but incredibly rewarding experience, taking you through stunning terraced vineyards and providing unique panoramic views from a higher elevation.
Yes, this route intersects with several other official trails. You'll find sections that overlap with the Sentiero Liguria - Tappa 4, Volastra – Porciano – C.se Pianca, and the Sentiero Verde Azzurro: Riomaggiore - Monterosso, among others. This offers opportunities to explore different parts of the Cinque Terre network.
For this moderate hike, wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, as paths can be uneven and steep. Bring plenty of water, especially in warmer months, and snacks. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is essential, and layers of clothing are advisable for changing weather. A small backpack, a map or GPS device, and a fully charged phone are also recommended.
The stairway leading up into Manarola, turning left from the main road, wasn't signposted this year, but it was easy to locate using the hiking app. The trail then climbs steeply up the eastern slope to the panoramic path parallel to the slope, which we walked back and forth along for a bit in a southerly direction. We then continued up the stairway to the upper path parallel to the slope to the east, which offers wonderful views of Manerola. The trail then continues uphill through an olive grove to Volastra, where there are two bars and a church with a simple interior. The subsequent path parallel to the slope through the vineyards, with views of Manarola and later of Corniglia, is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the 5 Terre. This is followed by a short section through a forest and a descent into Corniglia, which has now become very touristy.
The direct route from Corniglia to Manarola on the coast is unfortunately closed due to a rockfall. The route through the vineyards via Volastra is at least as beautiful, considerably more strenuous, and offers absolutely magnificent views. --- Cinque Terre: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/collection/3710129 Corniglia: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/2559848857 Manarola: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/2554233671
Another great, sunny tour in the Cinque Terre. The Via del Amore begins less than five minutes from the train station in Riomaggiore. This short section of the path was closed in 2011 due to a landslide and has been open again since August 2024; the €10 fee is worth paying. The coastal path is still closed from Manarola to Corniglia, but our Cinque Terre Trekking Card includes the shuttle bus up to Volastra, so we took advantage of that, and today's tour wasn't as strenuous as yesterday's. The path winds through the vineyards to Corniglia. We definitely deserve the Aperol Spritz and Lemon Spritz again today... so much so!
Fantastic hike through the vineyards of the Cinque Terre
Beautiful path by the sea with an enchanting view
A hike through the Cinque Terre National Park characterized by beautiful views and bathing spots with crystal clear water. The coastal path between the towns of Manarola and Corniglia is still closed. So you either go by bus, train or ferry or hike through the mountains. Sturdy shoes are required. And for the long ascent to Volastra also some fitness. You will be rewarded with breathtaking views and a large animal and plant world.
This route avoids the largest tourist flow. However, you are never completely alone there... Fantastic views. Blooming nature - the smell is indescribable Arrival and departure only by train!
