This loop is rated as difficult. It involves significant elevation changes, including steep ascents and descents with numerous man-made rock steps. While the overall length is about 16 km, the demanding terrain requires a good level of fitness. Proper hiking boots are highly recommended.
The terrain is diverse and challenging. You'll encounter sections of mule tracks, cobbled paths, and many steps. The path winds through olive groves, vineyards, and lush forests, with occasional narrowings and potentially slippery areas, especially after rain. Expect dramatic cliffside views throughout.
This loop offers breathtaking coastal views and passes through iconic locations. You'll experience the Coastal Trail Between Levanto and Monterosso, enjoy a stunning View of Monterosso al Mare from Punta Mesco, and pass through the charming village of Monterosso al Mare. There's also a notable View of Levanto from Trail 572.
The loop typically starts and ends in Levanto, offering a convenient circular route. You can also begin in Monterosso al Mare, but starting in Levanto often allows for a more gradual ascent before reaching the more challenging sections.
Yes, as this trail is largely within the Cinque Terre National Park and utilizes sections of the Sentiero Azzurro, you will likely need to purchase a Cinque Terre Card to access certain paid sections. The proceeds help with trail maintenance and restoration. It's advisable to check the official Cinque Terre National Park website for current requirements and card purchase locations before your hike.
While dogs are generally allowed on many trails in the Cinque Terre National Park, specific rules can vary. Given the challenging terrain, steep steps, and potential narrow sections, it might be difficult for some dogs. Always keep your dog on a leash and be prepared to carry them in very crowded or difficult spots. Check park regulations for any specific restrictions.
The best times to hike are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the weather is typically mild, and the landscapes are vibrant. Summer can be very hot and crowded, while winter may bring rain and potential trail closures due to landslides. Always check current trail conditions before heading out.
Yes, the route incorporates significant portions of other trails. You'll be hiking along sections of the Sentiero Verde Azzurro: Monterosso (Fegina) - Levanto, Sentiero Liguria - Tappa 5, and Levanto – Colla dei Bagari - Monterosso, among others.
Given the trail's difficulty and length, bring plenty of water, snacks, and wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen), a rain jacket, and a fully charged phone are also essential. Consider trekking poles for stability on descents.
The sections near Monterosso, especially those with numerous steps, can be quite tiring. However, these demanding parts often lead to the most rewarding panoramic views, such as the View of Monterosso al Mare from Punta Mesco. The entire Coastal Trail Between Levanto and Monterosso is renowned for its stunning scenery.
Yes, both Levanto and Monterosso al Mare are well-connected by train, which is often the most convenient way to access the trailheads in the Cinque Terre region. Parking can be limited and expensive, so public transport is highly recommended.
Extremely panoramic circular tour, of incredible beauty in particular when, before descending to Monterosso, you can follow a short detour (5 minutes) which allows you to reach a medieval church in ruins and a panoramic point from which the view extends over all the Cinque Terre up to Portovenere. The excursion is not difficult and, given the modest difference in altitude, it is also suitable for children who are used to walking.
From Monterossa it was a long, steep climb up to a very beautiful vantage point with an old ruin. From there we walked a great way far across the sea to Levanto. In Levanto we then took an extensive bathing break and ate local specialties in a small restaurant😃. Then it was back through town towards Monterossa, this time via the inland mountain route. It was a really great round with a few meters of altitude and wonderful views and bathing fun 🏖🏝🏞⛰️
Today we hiked to the first of the 5 villages, "Monterosso," on a wonderful path above the sea. Unfortunately, Monterosso didn't show its best side and we had to make our way back in pouring rain. The steep climb to the Sella di Bagari was quite a challenge for our four-legged seniors, as the path was slippery due to the rain and there were very high steps to climb. Once we got to the top, the sun came out again and the descent to Levanto was a bit more relaxed. Despite the weather, it was a great hike with lots of highlights, hence the many photos 😊
