September 20, 2024, Bergerie de Tolla – Naturpark Korsika

The initial section to the car park at the bridge is very steep, and the descent and ascent are very demanding. It gets easier from the car park in the valley. The village offers various places to stop for refreshments during the season. We were there at the end of September, when that was no longer the case. But we were still served food in the Bergerie, the end point of the hike. Sturdy shoes are essential for this tour, and walking sticks are helpful. Even if it seems boring at first after the car park, it soon becomes exciting with a great mountain stream landscape and waterfall. We (70+) found the tour challenging and enjoyed it.

Just getting there by car is an adventure in itself, before we park the car in the small town on the side of the road. We can already hear the roaring brook from above when it first goes slightly downhill. The forest path is wide, easy to walk on. After approx. 1 km you continue hiking Corsican style: over hill and dale, through puddles of water. The children hop from stone to stone in wild chamois fashion, have long since switched off their heads and let their feet do the work. And best of all: not a soul, absolutely quiet and no cell phone reception. So we jump, scramble and stroll slightly uphill. In between, there are always wild bathing spots with pools to jump into. It's a mountain stream, so the water isn't particularly warm. The kids have a lot of fun jumping off the rocks into the water. A bit hidden, on the other side of the river, there is even a small sandy beach. When the water level is low you can walk across, when the water level is higher you can only swim. The Cascade de Meli waterfall right on the way is just fun because you're slightly wet afterwards. The spray is tough and the children keep running back and forth. From here it is not far to the Bergerie de Tolla. After almost 3km we turn right, we cross a wooden bridge with a view. From here it is a mere 10 minutes to the Bergerie de Tolla. It goes uphill here on the narrow path. We are rewarded with an idyllic Bergerie in the middle of nature. A decent snack, put your feet up and just enjoy. From here we turn around. Further up there are more bathing pools and beautiful cascades, according to the Belgian hut keeper. With the children, however, that is too far for us today. We walk back the same way in a relaxed manner. Definitely take towels for swimming and water shoes with you.

Once not paying attention, touched a stone while bathing in the river. From now on only mountain shoes - and it's like the Porsche 911: It's not that easy to get in at all, but once you're in it, it's off 😅

You can start directly from the free parking lot about 1km away from the village of Canaglia. The approach road. about 3km, is very narrow and uneven, with only a few parking pockets in case of oncoming traffic. We were there around 9 a.m. to avoid the midday heat and therefore had free choice of parking. Later it quickly becomes more crowded and many people park on the narrow street towards the village. The village offers a small refreshment stop with homemade delicacies. The path is rocky and you should definitely be sure-footed and have sturdy shoes. In between there are always so-called pools where you can refresh yourself in the cold mountain river. On the way to Bergerie de Tolla you will pass at least 2 waterfalls, the 2nd of which is hidden and can only be found by adventurers. From the Bergerie you can go further or back again. You can treat yourself to something to eat and a cool drink here and strike up a conversation with one or two G20 hikers. This hike is definitely a must.

A very nice, short hike from the Soleil de Tattone campsite to the Cascade de Meli waterfall. The path is very rocky in parts and not suitable for prams. Hiking poles are recommended. You cross the famous GR20 and if you want, you can walk a little further to the Bergerie de Tolla.
