Hiking
The Sywell Reservoir loop offers an easy hike through varied terrain, perfect for a relaxing outing. This circular route spans 2.9 miles (4.6 km) with a gentle elevation gain of just 70 feet (21 metres), making it suitable for all fitness levels. You will wind through extensive woodlands, open wildflower meadows, and past the tranquil reservoir, often on well-maintained paths, completing the journey in about 1 hour and 11 minutes.
Located within Sywell Country Park, the trail provides excellent facilities to enhance your visit. You will find a cafe, toilets, and children's play areas, making it a great destination for families. The park is largely dog-friendly, though you should keep your dog on a lead in certain nature reserve sections to protect wildlife.
Beyond the beautiful scenery, the area is rich in biodiversity and history. Look out for various waterbirds from the available bird hides, including Canada Geese, Great Crested Grebes, and Kingfishers. You can also explore an amphibian pond with a viewing boardwalk and a butterfly garden, or admire the historic Edwardian pump house. The reservoir itself, built in 1903, once supplied water to Northampton and is now a popular spot for fishing.
