Udine Canal

Highlight • River

The "Roggia di Udine" is one of the three historic canals, was formerly the lifeline of the city of Udine. Nowadays very worth seeing, romantic and dreamy.

At the behest of the patriarch Bertoldo of Andechs-Merania, in 1236 the current cathedral began to be built, then dedicated to San Odorico and modeled after Franciscan examples. In 1257 the building was already used for worship; over the years various changes were made, until in 1335 it was consecrated with the title of Santa Maria Maggiore. The disastrous earthquake of 1348 caused serious damage to the cathedral, but did not stop its religious activity, so much so that several years passed before starting reconstruction. From known documents it appears that only in 1368 the Venetian master Pierpaolo dalle Masegne was called for the restoration of the building. He strengthened the walls, rebuilt the roof and made changes to the façade, including the replacement of the first grandiose rose window with the one still visible, inscribed in a square and smaller in size. The two minor rose windows, corresponding to the side aisles, were also modified, inscribing them in squares and inserting a fake loggia decoration that connects them. In the eighteenth century, it was almost completely transformed by the architect Domenico Rossi. In 1735, when the works were completed, the patriarch Daniele Delfino re-consecrated the cathedral with the new name of Santa Maria Annunziata. At the beginning of the twentieth century a restoration attempted to give the facade a fourteenth-century look.

Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot

Highlight • Religious Site

A magnificent building worth seeing.

The church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Via Garibaldi was consecrated in 1308 and in its almost empty interior you can admire the most beautiful and colorful frescoes in Friuli. They were painted by Pellegrino da San Daniele (actually Martino de Udine) between 1497 and 1522.

Udine Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Castello di Udine is a 16th-century castle situated on a hill in the city center of Udine, in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The castle stands at an altitude of 121 meters on the Salita al Castello (Castle Hill). It houses the city museum, which comprises an art gallery, an archaeological department, a numismatic department, the Risorgimento Museum, a gallery of drawings and prints, and the Friuli Photography Museum.

Until recently, the origin of the castle hill, a significant elevation in the middle of the Friulian plain, was thought to be an accumulation of rubble over the centuries. However, a legend has been passed down for centuries regarding its origin: It is said that when Attila sacked Aquileia, then one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire, in 452, he ordered his soldiers to build a mound so that he could observe the spectacle from Udine. The helmets of all the soldiers were filled with earth and brought to a spot in the center of the citadel. This is how the hill that now dominates the city is said to have been formed.

Church of Santa Maria di Castello

Highlight • Religious Site

Next to the castle is the Santa Maria del Castello church, probably the oldest in Udine, dating from the Lombard era. It has been renovated several times over the centuries: For example, the facade was completely renewed after the earthquake of 1511. Its three ships maintain an atmosphere of silence and contemplation.

Confraternity House, Udine

Highlight • Historical Site

The two-story building currently houses the castle guard's quarters on the upper floor, while a large rectangular hall is located on the ground floor. The visible beamed ceiling has decorated wooden elements. At one point, surrounded by floral motifs, the Mother of God with the child and a picture of the castle in the Middle Ages can be seen.
