View of the Skellig Islands and cliffs

Highlight • Viewpoint

Here you can park right on the street and virtually admire the Skellig Islands from the window. But it is worth getting off for it. The coast with its classic Irish, steep cliffs is also worth seeing as always.

Here from the ruins you have a fantastic view: the Skellig Islands can be seen to the west and Ballinskelligs Bay extends to the east.

Ducalla Head

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the parking lot in Ducalla, where the trail begins, it goes through the meadows to Duculla Head. Up the hill you will find the ruins of an old lighthouse called Bolus Signal Tower. From here you have a great view, also on Duculla Head. Following the fence and the signs, you will go back to the parking lot.

April 5, 2026,🇮🇪 Bolus Head Loop - Skellig Michael - Drehort von Star Wars
In one word:
Fantastic!

Today's loop was chosen very deliberately to see the Skellig Islands - the filming location for Star Wars - specifically Skellig Michael.
Today was forecast to be sunny and it was worth driving all the way out here.
Look at the photos!
Absolutely amazing and highly recommended by us.

Today we spent our day on the Atlantic coast🌊 and did 2 tours in different places.

This tour is our first of two in the western end of Kerry County.
The climb to the Bolus Barrack was strenuous but very worthwhile as there are great views on the way there and of course at the top😀.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park for the Bolus Head Loop?

Parking is typically available near the trailhead, often in designated areas close to the start of the loop. As the area can be less touristy, specific car parks might be smaller, so arriving earlier can be beneficial during peak times.

Is the Bolus Head Loop dog-friendly?

Yes, the Bolus Head Loop is generally dog-friendly. However, you will encounter sheep grazing freely along parts of the trail, especially on open moorland. It's crucial to keep dogs on a leash at all times to protect livestock and local wildlife.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The best time to hike the Bolus Head Loop is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During these months, you're more likely to experience milder weather and clearer views. Be prepared for changeable coastal weather at any time of year.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Bolus Head Loop?

No, there are no permits required or entrance fees to hike the Bolus Head Loop. It is a publicly accessible trail.

What is the terrain like on the Bolus Head Loop?

The terrain is diverse, featuring grassy paths, rocky inclines, and open moorland. You'll also walk on minor roads, hillside paths, and green roads, which can transition to rougher, uneven tracks. Expect soft or rocky ground, especially after rain, and some sections near cliff edges.

What are the main sights and viewpoints along the route?

The trail offers spectacular panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Skellig Islands (Skellig Michael and Little Skellig), Puffin Island, and Valentia Island. You'll also pass by the historic Old Stone Tower (Bolus Head Signal Tower) and enjoy views from Ducalla Head. St. Finian's Bay and Ballinskelligs Bay are also visible.

Is there a recommended direction to hike the Bolus Head Loop?

Yes, hiking the loop in a clockwise direction is often recommended. This approach can offer a more gradual ascent and potentially better views as you progress along the trail.

Are there any facilities or places to eat near the trailhead?

The Bolus Head Loop is known for being less touristy, so facilities directly at the trailhead are limited. You'll find amenities, cafes, and pubs in nearby villages along the Skellig Ring, such as Ballinskelligs or Portmagee, which are a short drive away.

What kind of wildlife might I see on the trail?

Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including various seabirds, and sheep grazing in the fields. If you're lucky and look out to sea, you might occasionally spot dolphins or even basking sharks offshore.

What should I wear and bring for the hike?

Given the varied terrain and coastal weather, wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Dress in layers, including waterproof and windproof outer shells, even on sunny days. Bring plenty of water, snacks, a map or GPS device, and sun protection.

Is the Bolus Head Loop suitable for beginners?

While considered 'moderate' in difficulty, the trail does involve moderately challenging ascents and descents, and uneven, sometimes soft or rocky ground. Beginners with a reasonable level of fitness should be able to complete it, but those new to hiking should be prepared for a few challenging sections and exercise care, especially near cliff edges.
