Hohenwittlingensteig – Premiumwanderwege Grafensteige

A stately fortress, bizarre rock formations and lots of fantastic views of the unique landscape of the Swabian Alb. The six kilometer long Hohenwittlingensteig near Bad Urach takes you on a varied route through the Swabian Alb biosphere area and offers lots of hiking fun for the whole family.

Highlights await you on a short route, such as the Geschlitzen Fels, the Hohenwittlingen castle ruins with a great view, the mysterious Schillerhöhle and the lush green Wolfsschlucht with sinter terraces. The tour is also a little insider tip for experienced hikers.

It starts at the parking lot in Hohenwittlingen. At the beginning of your round you walk through lush orchards and shortly afterwards you enjoy the peace and quiet of nature that surrounds you in the forest. After the so-called slotted rock, a short and crisp climb begins. But the effort is rewarded: Once you reach the top, you can enjoy fantastic views of the Ermstal and the typical mountains of the Alb. After almost five kilometers you will reach the Hohenwittlingen ruins. You can make yourself comfortable on the sun-warmed fortress walls, enjoy the view and the snack you brought with you.

The path continues through the forest to the Schillerhöhle. Anyone who has read the novel “Rulaman” by David Friedrich Weinland, published in 1876, will know the almost 250 meter long cave as the Tulka Cave. Shortly afterwards you hike through the green Wolfsschlucht. You walk past the impressive sinter terraces, which were created by mineral deposits.

The last part of your round takes you through the forest and you will soon reach your starting point again. At the end you can treat yourself to a piece of cake and a cup of coffee at Café Steffanie in town.
