For experienced cyclists, this challenging loop usually takes about 2 hours and 26 minutes to complete. However, this can vary based on your fitness level and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
No, this loop is generally considered difficult and requires very good fitness. It features significant elevation gains, including the challenging Category 2 ascent of Serra di Pigno with sections reaching up to 13.9% gradient.
The route features mostly well-paved surfaces, but cyclists have noted that the road surface on the Serra di Pigno climb can be "really bad" at both the beginning and the end. Caution is advised, especially on descents. Some segments might be unpaved or difficult, potentially requiring you to push your bike.
You'll be treated to breathtaking scenery. From the summit of Serra di Pigno, expect magnificent panoramic views of the Bay of Bastia, the Cap Corse peninsula, and the picturesque Gulf of Saint-Florent. Near Teghime Pass, there are beautiful vistas to both the east and west.
The best time to cycle in Corsica, including this loop, is during the mid-season, specifically May-June and September-October. The weather is cooler and the roads are generally quieter, making for a more enjoyable experience.
While the tour officially starts near Saint-Florent, you can typically find parking in the town itself. Look for public parking areas in Saint-Florent Marina or other designated spots within Saint-Florent to begin your ride.
No, you do not need any special permits or have to pay entrance fees to cycle this route. It primarily uses public roads in Corsica.
This route is designed for racebiking on roads and is not suitable for dogs. The challenging terrain and road conditions make it impractical and potentially unsafe for canine companions.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the GT20 / Étape 2 : Centuri - San Fiurenzu, GT20 / Étape 3 : San Fiurenzu - Belgude, and Sentier du Patrimoine de Patrimonio, among others.
Keep an eye out for unflappable cows grazing by the roadside, adding a unique touch to the experience. Also, while the Serra di Pigno climb is demanding, it's often combined with other local climbs like the Teghime Pass for an even greater challenge, transforming two Category 2 climbs into a more serious Category 1 experience.
Given the 'difficult' grading and significant elevation, wear appropriate racebike attire, including a helmet, padded shorts, and layers for varying temperatures. Bring plenty of water, energy snacks, a repair kit, and a fully charged phone. Due to variable road conditions, consider tires that can handle some rougher patches.
In 5 years since the last test I've lost ~40W and gained ~10kg but considering I've not done any "training" in years and just ride my bike for fun I'll take that. 20min at 377W and since I'm a tourer the hardest part wasn't the last 5min but was actually just not stopping to take photos 😂
Beautiful loop of 50 kms and 1060m of vertical drop. Only the road between Saint Florent and Oletta is not great (degraded road and car traffic ++) ... the rest is fun.
