Salt & Castles Tour

Cycling

Many cultural highlights await you on this tour south of Einbeck: On the one hand it is about salt and its extraction, on the other hand about the castles in the different districts. You can join the tour at different starting points, here we suggest you start at the Salzderhelden train station. After just one kilometer, the ruins of the Heldenburg await you, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Leinetal.

A little outside of town you can visit the former Saltworks Salzderhelden. We continue to the Ilme, which you only pay a short visit to. Because you continue to Rotenkirchen, where you can climb Grubenhagen Castle. The detour may make you sweat for a moment, but it's definitely worth it because of the beautiful view.

Passing the local recreation area Ahlsburg you reach the Saline of the same name in Sülbeck. Make a stop at the industrial monument and marvel at the centuries-old buildings. Then you pass the Leinepolder, an extensive bird and nature reserve where you can see storks, for example. Via the weir, you return to the starting point at the train station.

Heldenburg Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The castle, which was built by the Counts of Dassel or the Guelph Dukes in the 13th century at the latest, was the main residence of the Dukes of Grubenhagen / Braunschweig until the 15th century. The castle had been uninhabited since the 17th century and was becoming increasingly derelict. It collapsed around 1800 and lived as a ruin. 1983 to 1988 this was completely renovated. The Burgförderverein Heldenburg looks after the castle and has been organizing excavations, castle services and events such as castle festivals since 1984. Visits to the castle complex are made possible by the tourist information in Einbeck and the Heldenburg Castle Association.

At the castle tavern, the visitor arrives at the Gothic entrance gate, but the signs here direct them to the moat, which also serves as a parking lot. Here you can get extensive information about the history and elements of the castle ruins using the numerous information boards. After a short semicircle of approx. 200 meters you will find yourself on the back of the castle hill and already enjoy wonderful views of the Leinetal. A few more steps uphill you enter the castle courtyard. This looks very well-kept and is well stocked with benches and other information boards. From said east wall one looks down over the Salzderheldener half-timbered houses on the Leine, from the south side far over the Leinepolder to Northeim. The former castle chapel is set up as an open-air chapel - here people are sure to say yes on a regular basis.

Detailed information is also available on the beautifully designed website heldenburg.de

June 23, 2025,1. Einbecker Fahrradtour zur Heldenburg
A very nice bike ride to Heldenburg Castle. From there, you have a beautiful view of the entire valley. The bike paths are well-maintained and mostly paved. Only on the short climb to Heldenburg Castle should you engage first gear and select the highest assistance level on your e-bike, as the climb is very steep.
