The most common starting point for this loop is from Newstead Abbey itself, where parking facilities are available. Alternatively, some variations of the loop can be started from nearby conservation villages like Linby, which may offer additional parking options.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly, but specific rules apply within the grounds of Newstead Abbey. Dogs are usually welcome on leads in most outdoor areas, but may be restricted from certain indoor attractions or specific garden sections. Always check local signage for the most current regulations.
The Newstead Abbey loop can be enjoyed year-round. Spring and summer offer vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery, while autumn provides beautiful foliage. Winter walks are also possible, though some unsurfaced paths may become muddy, especially after rain. Consider visiting during off-peak times to avoid crowds, particularly around the Abbey.
While the trail itself is generally free to access, there is typically an entrance fee to access the grounds and facilities of Newstead Abbey. This fee contributes to the upkeep of the historical site and its extensive gardens. Check the official Newstead Abbey website for current pricing and opening times.
The loop offers a mixed terrain experience. You'll encounter sections of dismantled railway lines, like the Linby Trail, which are often flat and firm. Other parts include tarmac roads, gravel tracks, and unsurfaced paths through grass fields and woodlands. Expect some uneven surfaces and potentially muddy conditions, especially in wetter months. There are occasional slight gradients, with one notable 'steep but rewarding climb' near Linby Tip.
This loop is rich in both natural beauty and historical significance. You'll pass the magnificent Newstead Abbey, the ancestral home of Lord Byron, with its extensive gardens, lakes, and a waterfall. Other highlights include the Station Avenue, a View of the Lone Tree in the Fields, and charming conservation villages like Linby and Papplewick. Keep an eye out for wildflowers, grazing horses, and potentially peacocks on the Abbey grounds.
The main 11 km loop is rated as moderate and requires good fitness, so it might be challenging for very young children. However, within the Newstead Abbey grounds, there are shorter, easier walks suitable for all fitness levels, with some paths accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and prams, making it family-friendly for shorter excursions.
Yes, sections of this route follow parts of other established trails. You will find yourself on portions of the Robin Hood Way, as well as paths known as Hall Lane, The Circle, Hayden Lane, and Quarry Lane.
The primary facilities, including cafes, restrooms, and visitor services, are located within the grounds of Newstead Abbey. The charming villages of Linby and Papplewick, which the loop passes through, may also offer local pubs or small shops for refreshments.
Given the mixed terrain and potential for mud, sturdy walking boots are highly recommended. Depending on the weather, waterproofs are advisable. Bring sufficient water and snacks, especially if you plan to complete the full loop. A map or GPS device is also useful for navigation, though the trail is generally well-marked.
While you can start from various points, beginning at Newstead Abbey allows you to explore the historical site before or after your hike. Some hikers prefer to tackle the 'steep but rewarding climb' near Linby Tip early in their journey. There isn't a universally 'better' direction, but considering the Abbey's opening hours and your energy levels can help you decide.
Best walked early or late as it gets busy the parking is in a proper layby parking place although there are several along that road. There is a toilet and coffee place at the Abbey for all to use.
Start from Newstead Abbey or Linby. The Abbey has a car park (fee payable) cafe, toilets and the gardens to view. Linby has a cafe beside the route. With either start there is a cafe halfway or at the finish
Great walk, flat and nice and firm underfoot today, lovely tea shop in at Moreton Farms in Papplewick.
