Roque de los Muchachos

Highlight • Summit

The Roque de los Muchachos (2426 meters) is the highest point on the island of La Palma and one of the best places in the world for observing the sky. It is not surprising that here we find an observatory where great advances have been made in the study of the universe.

View of Roque Palmero

Highlight • Summit

The impressive Palmero rock, with 2306 meters, closes the northern part of the Taburiente caldera. The sunset in this place is magical, when the sun's rays make the colors of the caldera a spectacle. It is known that the Roque Palmero was a place frequented by the Benahoarite aborigines (the first settlers of the island), since remains have been found near the summit.

Roque Palmero Summit

Highlight • Summit

The highest peak on the western crater rim of the Caldera de Taburiente offers a fantastic view of the caldera and its fissures. To the south you can see the highest elevations in the form of Pico Bejenado and Pico Birigoyo (behind). With good visibility, you can also look far along the west coast from here.

Great view of the Caldera de Taburiente. At the top of the Roque, just follow the path for about 200m, descend a little, and enjoy the landscape. On the way there are various information boards about the flora, fauna and geology of the mountain.

Trail Reviews

Stefan
April 7, 2022, Roque de los Mucachos

4th day of hiking on La Palma. Today we went on a summit tour! Roque de Los Muchachos, Marangano, Roque Palmero and Pico de la Cruz. We hiked these 4 stately hills and a few kilometers in between today. Since we started right after breakfast, we were able to claim one of the scarce spaces on La Palma's highest parking lot. The hike above the clouds with a gigantic view of the Caldera de Taburiente and over to the Teide on Tenerife was simply breathtaking.

A wonderful day! The higher we drove, the warmer it got – a rare phenomenon. Pure sunshine, hardly any wind, and temperatures up to 16 degrees Celsius at the island's highest point. That alone would have been enough, but then there was this fantastic little hike on the northwest side of the caldera. It couldn't be more beautiful; the long drive was more than worth it! If you get there early enough, you can find a parking spot, and most tourists only see the main attraction and are soon back in their cars, so you're practically alone – at least on this side of the caldera! Highly recommended!!!
