Parking is available at Wycoller Country Park. Note that the hamlet of Wycoller itself has restricted car access, so you'll typically park outside the main village and walk in to begin the trail.
No, there are no permits required or entrance fees to access Wycoller Country Park or to hike the Lad Law loop.
Yes, the trail is dog-friendly. However, as much of the route crosses open moorland and farmland, it's essential to keep dogs on a lead, especially during lambing season or when livestock and ground-nesting birds are present.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and summer offer the most pleasant conditions with blooming heather on the moors and better visibility for the panoramic views. Autumn provides beautiful colours. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear due to potentially boggy sections and exposure on the moors.
The terrain is varied, featuring easily accessible paths, cobbled areas, old coach roads, and woodland sections. As you ascend towards Lad Law, you'll encounter expansive moorland with stone tracks designed to prevent boggy conditions. The climb up Boulsworth Hill is steady but not overly severe, with rock formations of millstone grit.
The trail is rich in history and natural beauty. You'll pass the atmospheric Wycoller Hall ruins, the ancient Single Slab Clapper Bridge, and a double-arched Packhorse Bridge in Wycoller. The highlight is reaching the Lad Law (Boulsworth Hill) Summit, which offers panoramic 360-degree views of the Wycoller Valley, Pendle Hill, the Ribble Valley, and on clear days, even the Lake District and Forest of Bowland.
Yes, the walk is often described as a "figure of 8" route. This means you have the option to complete a shorter walk by omitting the second loop that ascends to Boulsworth Hill and Lad Law, focusing instead on the Wycoller village area and its immediate surroundings.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with several well-known paths. You'll find yourself on parts of the Pendle Way, the Great North Trail (Yorkshire Dales), and the Bronte Way during your hike.
The open moorland sections, particularly around Brink Ends Moor and Flake Hill Moor, are home to various bird species. Keep an eye out for curlews and marsh harriers, which have been spotted in the area.
Wycoller hamlet, where the trail begins, is a preserved village with limited commercial facilities. However, there are typically small tea rooms or visitor facilities within Wycoller Country Park itself, and more options can be found in nearby villages or towns.
Really nice walk. Parking at wycoller country park. Costs about £1.40 on the ringo app for all day. (Machine didn't work so need to download ringo before hand). Toilets and picnic benches near the ruins. Steep climb upto lad low over the moors but very scenic. I diverted to see the waterfalls on the way back. Lots of sheep but no cows on route so bonus. 👌 would do again. Didn't come across anywhere to eat/drink so would need food.
