The Charcoal Burner's Trail is one of the Heart Trails, the most beautiful day hikes in the Ore Mountains. It meets all the criteria for nature and offers, among other things, numerous trails and interesting insights into the charcoal burning craft.

March 16, 2025, Köhlerweg / rund um Sosa

Today we went for a hike around the town of Sosa. The Charcoal Burners' Trail is a circular trail and well signposted. Along the way, there are many beautiful views of the town and the surrounding countryside. Interpretive panels provide information about the history of charcoal burning.

ᵂᴱᴿᴮᵁᴺᴳ Can it really be that I'm already on my third (and therefore last 😢) day of hiking in the Ore Mountains? I also can't believe two other facts: 1) The fog is drifting away and making room for the sun! 🥹 Although I really enjoyed the mystical atmosphere in the forest, it is of course just as nice to have the sun on your face and to spend loooong breaks in the autumn warmth. 2) How much the landscape of the Ore Mountains can change in just a few kilometers. I'm on the Köhlerweg around the remote village of Sosa: Here, spruce mountain forests alternate with wide meadows, where a few flowers still grow even in October. On the twelve kilometers of this day's hike, I experience rushing streams, old forests, sheep pastures and endless views of the roofs of Sosa and the hilly landscape all around. The Köhlerweg is one of the heart trails that characterize the most beautiful tours in the Ore Mountains. On the one hand, this means that it is well marked and guarantees many moments in nature - on the other hand, it means that the history and traditions of the Ore Mountains come to life along the way. In this case, one of the oldest craft techniques, because the Köhlerweg leads along historic charcoal kiln sites.

Today I hiked the Köhlerweg near Sosa again. The first time I wasn't so lucky with the weather, but today it was great☀️

"The circular hike on the Charcoal Burners' Trail around Sosa leads past historic charcoal kiln sites and offers magnificent panoramic views of the idyllic charcoal burning village." This is an excerpt from the official description. The trail is very varied, sometimes through the forest, but also stretches across open meadows with great views and many informative panels about the surrounding area and the old charcoal burning craft. The round, flat charcoal burners' sites can still be discovered in the forest. You can cool your feet in the idyllic Kneipp pool. A nature conservation association has created a fruit tree trail with 50 fruit varieties suitable for the Ore Mountains, with very natural hedges made from pruned trees between the trees. Since I was in the area, I added a detour to the dam. The descent down to the stilling basin was a bit adventurous and required surefootedness; the ascent on the opposite side was more comfortable, and the path was more clearly visible.

Start at the free parking lot in the village. Then head uphill to the starting point of the charcoal burner's trail. A fantastic, varied circular route around Sosa with interesting information panels about charcoal burning and other related trades. Enjoy beautiful views of Sosa and the surrounding area along the way. Highly recommended.

May 14, 2023, Köhlerweg Sosa

Today we walked the Köhlerweg near Sosa. And what can I say: for me one of the top ten rounds in the Ore Mountains. At the beginning a fee. Parking lot but then a great way around Sosa with a lot of history and even more nature. You can only stop off at the beginning or end of the tour, so the only thing that helps is to take food with you and take a break along the way. Enjoy the great views. 😎

A recommended hike in the Ore Mountains with refreshment stops.

On tour together with Wandertino! Actually it should be the 12 apostles in the Franconian Forest, but the weather report for the afternoon hours predicted rain and thunderstorms. And so it went to the tranquil Sosa on the Köhlerweg. From the parking lot for the hikers we went towards the center and immediately after the first houses we turned into a narrow meadow path. We followed this for over two kilometers, always around the deer bone, through fields, woods and meadows. Surefootedness was required here and sturdy shoes were an advantage! We have often wished for long trousers, but nettles are supposed to be good for rheumatism. When the Rotgrubener Straße was reached, the paths became wider and hiking became more relaxed. On the entire route there were always wonderful panoramic views of the charcoal village and on 20 display boards you could learn all kinds of interesting facts about the old craft of charcoal production. The historic Meilerplatz in the northern part of the round and the last producing charcoal burning in the village are further highlights. The Kneipp facility right on the edge of the path was ideal for a short break before going back up to the starting point at the village stream. There they refreshed themselves with a draft beer in Meiler 2.0 and then started their journey home. Conclusion: a very beautiful hiking trail that is sometimes quite demanding. The signs leave nothing to be desired and numerous seating options invite you to take a break. Many greetings to my hiking companions and thank you very much for the beautiful tour!
