Beinn Chabhair – Southern Highlands

Hiking

The westernmost of the Crianlarich Hills, Beinn Chabhair is a relatively accessible Munro from Inverarnan beyond the northern tip of Loch Lomond. In keeping with the character of its neighbours to the east, it has a rough and knobbly summit ridge and boasts beautiful views across the Southern Highlands.

There’s parking at the Drovers Inn and it’s polite to provide some form of custom either before or after your hike – it serves good food! The inn is popular with hikers tackling the West Highland Way and has a rich history dating back 300 years.

Cross the River Falloch and begin the ascent, which shadows the Ben Glas Burn all the way to the small mountain pool of Lochan Beinn Chabhair. Before that, there’s the Beinglas Waterfall to admire and plenty of often boggy moorland to cross. The gradients are relatively easygoing up until the lochan, after which things get a little steeper.

The path zigzags up the main ridge, sometimes winding up rocky knolls and sometimes bypassing them. Eventually, you arrive at Beinn Chabhair’s 3,061-foot (933 m) summit, which enjoys splendid views across to the bristling Arrochar Alps and the other ridges of the Crianlarich Hills, as well as northwest towards magnificent Ben Lui and its subordinates.

The best line of descent is back the way you came, allowing you to appreciate the Highland scenery that was at your back on the way up.

The Drovers Inn

Highlight • Pub

The Drovers Inn is a popular establishment just beyond the northern tip of Loch Lomond. With a well stocked bar, good food and rooms for the night, it makes for a handy stopping point on the West Highland Way or for those driving along the A82 on the way to or from the heart of the Highlands.

During the Inn's 300-year history, it has seen plenty of interesting characters through its doors, including Scottish folk hero Rob Roy.

You can pitch your tent or rent one of the cosy cabins at Beinglas Farm. A small pub nearby offers beer and snacks. Right next door is a tiny shop that sells everything a hiker's heart desires (even gas cartridges) at local prices. Toilet and shower facilities are also available, as well as a tap to replenish the drinking water supplies.

Beinglas Waterfall

Highlight • Natural Monument

If hiking Beinn Chabhair then I’d recommend reaching the summit via the waterfall. However, as it’s a steep climb, avoid it on the way back down by choosing the longer route that winds back to the campsite.

Lochan Beinn Chabhair

Highlight • Viewpoint

This little mountain lochan is found below the slopes of the Munro of Beinn Chabhair. The ground steepens from here up to the knobbly summit ridge, so it's worth taking a break here and grabbing a bite to eat. The Ben Glas Burn flows from the lochan, which collects runoff from the slopes above.

Beinn Chabhair

Highlight • Natural Monument

Beinn Chabhair is a 3,061-foot (933 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. I'd describe it as lumpy bumpy knobbly bobbly! I climbed it from An Caisteal as an out and back before moving on to Beinn a' Chròin, but it's commonly walked from the southern end of Glen Falloch.
