Pure relaxation in the rolling hills of Rhenish Hesse: On the Selztal cycle path you will experience the peace and quiet of the river and a diverse cross-section of Rhenish Hesse - from the Rhine in Ingelheim through the wine hills to Alzey to the North Palatinate mountains near Kirchheimbolanden.
Before starting in the Imperial Palace and red wine town of Ingelheim, it is best to take enough time to explore the relics from the times of Charlemagne in the Imperial Palace area with museum, along the well-preserved city gates and walls and around the castle church. Or you can reverse the tour, start in Alzey and end with an extensive tour of the Imperial Palace. For independent exploration, we recommend the Imperial Palace app.
Along the Selz you will find plenty of places to stop for every taste and opportunities for refreshing ice cream breaks, for example at the lively market square in Nieder-Olm and in the lovely wine villages. On pleasant routes through the wide valleys, you finally reach the beautiful half-timbered town of Alzey with its castle, the town museum with a modern stone hall with Roman finds and the lively horse market.

Detour to the imperial palace

Charlemagne (748–814) chose Ingelheim as a base for his travels through his Frankish Empire and had a representative Palatinate built for him - that was the name of the seat of government at the time. In terms of importance, the imperial palace in Ingelheim is on a par with the palaces in Aachen and Nijmegen. In the Middle Ages, world history was written in Ingelheim - with exclusive events such as coronations, imperial synods and abdications.
After Charlemagne, two handfuls of rulers still used the Ingelheim Imperial Palace - it remained an important place in European politics and cultural history for over 300 years. Ruins and restored remains, some of which have merged with residential buildings, reconstructions of the hall area, paved traces, information boards on the historical circular route that explain every remaining or disappeared relic and thus make the past splendor understandable (city tour recommended).
