Schluchseer Jägersteig Premium Trail – hiking in the Upper Black Forest

Hiking

The Schluchsee is the largest lake in the Black Forest - reason enough to look at the water from different perspectives. The 70 square kilometer Schluchsee is the focus of the approximately twelve kilometer long Jägersteig.

The round starts at the “Im Wolfsgrund” hiking car park or alternatively at the Schluchsee train station, which you can reach with the S 1 from Freiburg im Breisgau or Seebrugg. The path climbs right at the beginning, a total of 260 meters in altitude has to be mastered. An entrance portal tells you when to get on the actual Jägersteig. The narrow hiking trail leads you through the dense forest and takes you further and further uphill to the Stutzhütte. From here you walk on to the Hansele rock and then turn left. Shortly thereafter, a fantastic view over the Schluchsee opens up - time for a breather.

The forest path leads you over the Ahaberg to the Bildstein. From the vantage point you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake and, with a bit of luck, of the Swiss Alps. After a break, a narrow path leads down to Unteraha.

Arrived on the shore, you can continue hiking along the lake circular path and let your eyes wander over the blue water and the surrounding Black Forest mountains. If you still have enough time, you can sit on the shore of the lake and enjoy the landscape even better. Soon you will reach the Amalienruhe, a rocky outcrop with a romantic view.

Now it's not far to Schluchsee-Ort. Here you can choose a café or a restaurant to stop before you walk back to the hiking car park.

If you don't arrive by car, you can alternatively start this hike at the train station in Schluchsee-Aha. The S 1 takes you there and back from Freiburg im Breisgau or Seebrugg very comfortably every hour.

Tri-border boundary stone (Fürstenberg, Schluchsee, Baden)

Highlight • Monument

This is where the old boundaries of the Principality of Fürstenberg, the communal forest of Schluchsee and the state forest of the Grand Duchy of Baden come together. A landmark marks the border triangle, an information board tells you something more about this place.

The Bildstein is one of the best panoramic mountains in the entire Black Forest. From its rocky peak you can enjoy an incomparable panorama, because from no other peak can you admire the Schluchsee in its entirety.

Trail Reviews

Arne
April 18, 2024, Genießerpfad Schluchseer Jägersteig

Nice tour, the weather is not quite what we had planned for our vacation, but you just have to make the best of it. We started hiking in the snow and arrived back in bright sunshine, but it was cold and windy. The route leads steadily uphill for the first third, but not too steeply. In between there are beautiful views of the Schluchsee and the surrounding mountains on the opposite bank. At the end you are rewarded with a great view from the Bildstein, on whose summit you can take a nice rest. The middle third leads steadily downhill, but the paths are very rocky and were a bit slippery today. In places we also walked over some scree. The last third is very flat and follows the banks of the Schluchsee, there are beautiful places here that invite you to take a break.

The second tour today took me to the Schluchseer Jägersteig, which is a premium hiking trail.

Wellness - hiking - feeling good 😉 After a relaxing day in the Titisee bathing paradise yesterday, we walked the premium trail Jägersteig at Schluchsee today. The small detour to the Riesenbühl Tower was definitely worth it. With fantastic weather, we had a great view over the Schluchsee to the Alps. Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau... all great to see. After the descent we ran the official Jägersteig. On a beautiful path it went humanely uphill through the forest. Again and again with a view of the lake, the Feldberg and the Herzogenhorn. We took a short break at the Bildstein and enjoyed the peace and the view. From there it was only downhill to the Schluchsee, and then to start the way back along the lake. All in all a wonderful tour. We recommend. The atmosphere around the Schluchsee is of course incredibly beautiful and relaxing when the weather is so wonderful. Mainly because there isn't that much going on at the moment.

Since the journey went smoothly, I was able and had to take advantage of the fantastic winter weather and hike the Jägerstieg trail again. Apart from the fallen trees, it was a dream! Of course, trudging through the sometimes slushy snow was tiring, but there were also snow-free sections, and otherwise, it was simply fun. In the forest, apart from the crunching under my boots, there was absolute silence. I was shocked by the Schluchsee lake; a dream in summer, it looks terrible in winter, almost completely dry. This is probably because a pump from the Rhine was broken in the summer, and the snowmelt was largely nonexistent last spring. In any case, I'm already looking forward to more beautiful hikes, and starting Monday, I'll be joining the group.

The Jägersteig With the Greenpeace Freiburg group we were at the nature camp at Schluchsee last weekend. On Saturday we went paddling and swimming in the pleasantly cool Schluchsee. Hiking was announced for Sunday. So I grabbed my walking sticks and off we went to the Jägersteig. Initially along the banks of the Schluchsee, it soon went uphill into the forest to the Bildstein. The view was great, the Black Forest anyway and there were also many blueberries. Summary: It was a physically demanding weekend, but it was still very nice. This weekend has strengthened the cohesion of the group.

At the end of our vacation 😢 and at the same time to end the year, we decided on the Schluchseer Jägersteig and got another stamp for our hiking book 😎 You do almost all of the elevation gain of the tour right at the beginning, but you will also be rewarded with a great view of the Bildstein. In contrast to the last few days, we were really lucky with the weather 🌞 🌤️ We wish everyone a happy new year 🎆🎇🧨

We started the tour in bright sunshine. Then it got tighter over time and there was a short shower in between. But there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. And were therefore prepared for all eventualities 😀 The path through the forest is beautiful. I love walking on forest floor. Fantastic view of the lake and finally a while along the lake. Personally, walking in a straight line is too boring for me. I like the root paths much better 😀 But all in all a wonderful tour that you should definitely do in hiking boots

With forecasts of over 30 degrees, today's hike definitely had to lead to the water somewhere. In the Jägersteig at Schluchsee, which I tackled early in the morning, I found the right tour (thanks for the tip, Barbara). There is a free car park at the cemetery in Schluchsee and after a few meters through the village, past the Kurhaus, you will find the entrance to the Jägersteig. First you have to put up with the road noise of the parallel federal highway for a while, then the path slowly climbs in the forest and the engine noise is replaced by the chirping of birds. Alternating between narrow paths and wider forest roads, the trail climbs higher and higher through typical coniferous forest. From time to time aisles have been cut into the forest. Willowherb, foxglove and St. John's wort bloom here. In between, grasses sway in the warm summer wind and every now and then you can catch a glimpse of Lake Schluchsee. Once you have walked through the aisles, you dive back into the cool shadows of the forest. Individual information boards tell about the history of this area and about special features. Soon the wayside shrine, a rocky outcrop, is reached and you can have a nice view of the Schluchsee. After a relatively short downhill stretch, this is also reached at Aha. The shore path leads from here back to Schluchsee-Ort. Again and again there are opportunities to come directly to the lake shore and make a bathing stop. The path itself is only moderately used today, which makes walking pleasant. The lake views, which you always have, garnish the path wonderfully. Individual sections of the trail run in full sun, while other sections of the trail are shaded by trees. Access to water can be found almost everywhere. Arriving in Schluchsee, I walk around the Amalienruhe viewing pavilion and a short walk through the village finally brings me back to the car.
