This itinerary almost faithfully follows the 2021 route of the Conquistadores Cup, a long-distance mountain bike race that develops between the coast and the splendid hilly hinterland of Porto Azzurro. In just over 28 kilometres, the route will challenge you with short but demanding climbs and hilarious technical descents, which make this ring an interesting mix not only from a landscape point of view but also from a cycling and sporting point of view.
Porto Azzurro is a fishing village with ancient origins, which has now become one of the liveliest and most popular centers on the Island of Elba. The first twelve kilometers of the itinerary take you from the tourist port of Porto Azzurro to the top of Monte Arco, and mostly develop along the coast. Along this stretch, you will pass by the Barbarossa beach and the Reale beach before crossing the sandy isthmus that separates the sea from the Terranera lake, a suggestive emerald green body of water. Two steep dirt ramps then take you to the top of Monte Arco, which despite its low elevation (278 m a.s.l.) offers a magnificent 360-degree panorama.
From Monte Arco begins a fun, simple and flowing downhill path that leads to San Felo. Here begins a very steep winding path in the woods that leads to Serra dei Sassi Turchini. Here, thanks to the efforts of a group of volunteers and the involvement of local institutions, the Sassi Turchini holiday home was built, an accommodation facility dedicated to social tourism involving people with disabilities or other forms of disadvantage.
Two more steep ramps followed by panoramic descents with breathtaking views of the sea take you back within ten kilometers between the houses of Porto Azzurro.

Superb tour, except that the first climb was unrideable due to the scree and steepness—it was simply a blast. 🤬🤑 All the other trails were beautifully flowing and wonderful to ride. 👍🤘 Simply beautiful. In super summery temperatures. 🌞🥵😎
After the rooster had already started his work at half past two, he had me ready at just before six and I decided to have an early door on my own. On the coastal path to Porto Azurro, up to the local mountain above the town, on the route from the ConquistdoresCup, but in the steep opposite direction, further in the opposite direction to the trails on MonteArco, where I found a few new ones, and on the small beach with the freshwater lake past back to our beach... Birgit wasn't really lazy either and meanwhile did a lap in the water and before that (lazy??) stood around on the SUP to the neighboring bay...😂
Beautiful panoramic tour in the hinterland of Porto Azzuro past beautiful little beaches. The section km 11.9 - 11.4 is extremely steep and riding loose is impossible.
Very cloudy today, the high mountains even in the clouds.... ....but at least swam in the sea for the first time (me, Birgit is every day...😂) Small round at noon: Along the sea to Monte Arco, criss-cross over the ArcoTrails and on foot to the summit, then over the very beautiful trails from the ConquistadoresCup to below the Monte Mar de Capanne summit, both on foot and up then on the 100 m higher Monte Castello, from which you have a great view of the north and south coast at the same time... At the end of a short but great trail down to Porto Azurro
