Explore the enchanting western side of the forest with this gently undulating 27-mile (44 km) loop. There are some short sections of road but most of the Tour uses the compact gravel trails dedicated to cyclists.
Head towards Burley along the wide former Southampton to Dorchester railway line known as the Castleman's Corkscrew trail. At Holmsley, you’ll find a tearoom located where the former station used to lie.
Bypass the village of Burley by taking the scenic rolling gravel trail on Castle Hill Lane. A sweeping open road then leads you to Picket Plain where you’ll join a track that takes you under the busy A31 to the northern side of the forest.
The halfway point is Linford Bottom, a tranquil setting next to Linford Brook. The spot is ideal for a picnic, and the stream offers an opportunity for paddling.
Ascend gently along a lengthy woodland gravel track past Greenford Bottom to meet a quiet road forming a link under the dual carriageway to your next set of glorious off-road trails.
At Millyford Bridge, you’ll encounter a short section of road which takes you past an interesting stone war memorial known as the Portuguese Fireplace. This restored landmark marks the site where Canadian and Portuguese foresters camped out during the First World War.
Enjoy weaving back to Brockenhurst between various woodland inclosures and past an eerie collection of dead oak trees on a flooded patch of land. On arrival you will pass through the high street at Brockenhurst, which is served by cafes, restaurants and a supermarket. Other than the tearooms at Holmsley, this is the only option to fuel up on food.
