Road cycling

Embark on a challenging road cycling adventure with the Carbost, Portree & Sligachan loop from Glen Brittle, a route favored by local cyclists for its dramatic scenery. This difficult ride spans 53.6 miles (86.2 km) and involves a significant 3675 feet (1120 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 4 hours and 4 minutes to complete. You will experience continuous ascents and descents, passing the historic Sligachan Old Bridge and enjoying views of the majestic Cuillin mountains and rugged coastline.

Prepare for a demanding ride that requires very good fitness, as the terrain includes both asphalt and potentially unpaved segments where you might need to push your bike. The road into Glen Brittle itself is a 7-mile winding single-track road with passing places, adding to the route's challenging nature. Plan your visit carefully to account for the varied surfaces and the time needed to navigate this extensive loop.

This loop is a top favorite among local road cyclists on the Isle of Skye, celebrated for its physical challenge and access to key villages and attractions. As you ride, you will pass through Carbost, home to the renowned Talisker Distillery, and the bustling Portree Harbour. Glen Brittle also offers impressive views of the Black Cuillins, making this route a comprehensive tour of Skye's iconic landscapes.

Glenbrittle Campsite, Shop & Café

Highlight • Cafe

The Glenbrittle Campsite is a brilliant base for an outdoor type. The road to get here is a wonderful ride but if you are only here for the road cycling it is an out and back every day to join into the loops of the island. If you fancy a climb or a walk as well it's brilliantly situated for access to the Cuillin Hills.
The campsite is clean and basic with a wonderful view out to sea or up to the mountains. The cafe is good serving a nice coffee and good food and the shop sells snacks and supplies as well as camping essentials.
Open April to September.

Sligachan Old Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The old bridge was built between 1810 and 1818. There are some beautiful myths surrounding them, such as that dipping one's face into the River Sligachan at the bridge bestows eternal beauty ("The enchanted waters under the Sligachan Bridge"). You really have to dip your face, not wet your face with your hands, and then not dry your face either.

Carbost is the largest settlement on the Minginish peninsula. It's best known for the Talisker Distillery which has a visitor centre, shop and tasting rooms. The Oyster Shed, just up the hill from the distillery is also very much worth a visit and probably better for cyclists who want to be able to continue their ride in a straight line!
There is also a very handy local shop.
