This route was planned by komoot.
The Komoot tour for the San Glorio to Collada de Llesba CIMA Climb is estimated to take approximately 3 hours and 24 minutes to complete. This duration is for the full round trip as described in the tour data.
This route is classified as difficult. The climb to Puerto de San Glorio from Potes is a long ascent, stretching 26.5 kilometers with a significant elevation gain. While some sections might feel manageable, the overall length and sustained effort require very good fitness. The final push to Collada de Llesba adds an extra challenge with narrow sections and potential steep gradients.
The road to Puerto de San Glorio is generally in very good condition and fully paved. The final 16 kilometers of this section maintain a steady gradient of 6-7%. After the pass, the 1.8 to 2-kilometer segment to Collada de Llesba is also paved, though it includes an initial concrete section and can be quite narrow. Be aware that this narrow road has a significant drop-off with no barriers, which can be intimidating.
You can expect magnificent scenery, especially once you pass the initial villages and enter the open countryside. As you climb, open views of the valley unfold, culminating in terrific views of the Picos de Europa from Collado de Llesba. This area is an exceptional vantage point for admiring the majestic mountains and the valley below, as the route lies within the Picos de Europa Natural Park.
Beyond the stunning views from Collado de Llesba, you'll pass through the San Glorio Pass, a historic mountain pass. A distinctive landmark at the Mirador de Llesba is an impressive statue of a brown bear (Monumento al Oso Pardo), which is a popular attraction.
The route is generally accessible year-round, but snow can be present from November to April, potentially affecting cycling conditions. For the best experience with clear roads and pleasant weather, consider cycling outside of these winter months.
While specific parking details aren't provided, the classic approach to Puerto de San Glorio often starts from Potes. You would typically find parking options in or around the town of Potes, or at the San Glorio Pass itself, depending on your starting point for the climb.
No, you do not need specific permits or to pay entrance fees to cycle this route. The trail is located within the Picos de Europa Natural Park, which is generally open for public access without fees for activities like cycling on public roads.
As this is a road cycling route, dogs are generally allowed if they are safely secured (e.g., in a trailer or basket) and do not interfere with traffic or other cyclists. However, given the challenging nature of the climb and narrow sections, it's important to prioritize safety for both your dog and yourself.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notably, the entire climb covers 100% of the CIMA CA03] San Glorio - Collada de Llesba route. It also briefly crosses sections of the Transcantábrica, Senda de la Reserva del Saja, Camino Vadiniense, and the Camino Lebaniego.
Traffic on this route is typically light, though it can increase on weekends and during the peak summer season. Be particularly cautious on the narrow section between San Glorio Pass and Collado de Llesba, as it has a significant drop-off with no barriers. Always wear appropriate safety gear and be aware of your surroundings.
While the climb itself is quite remote once you leave the villages, the town of Potes, often the starting point for this climb, offers various amenities such as cafes, restaurants, and accommodation. It's advisable to stock up on water and snacks before starting the ascent.
Fantastic climb from Potes. Easy gradients, do it early to avoid the traffic, climb through the mist into the sunlit vistas of the Picos de Europa
🤗🚲Wonderful views but a very, very long climb. Went up hill for nearly 20 miles without stopping, just took it as easy as I could. Headwinds near the summit didn't help. Fought headwinds in the valley bottom once descended. 🤔 Completed my challenge.🤗👍😎🚲
