Ferracciolo Dam

Highlight • Monument

The dam creates a basin of water in the dense vegetation for a suggestive panorama.

Stefano Hill

Highlight • Summit

There are 2 ascents to Poggio Stefano. One comes straight from the street and takes about half an hour. The other variant is the salita di Marco Olmo (famous over 70 year old Italian ultra runner), which goes off from Cala Coticcio. Badly marked at the beginning (to the right of the bay along the sea), the ascent is then marked by red flags (remnants from the last trail event) and countless cairns. The panorama and the 360 degree view are definitely worth it.

Trail Reviews

Wolf Beyenburg
October 17, 2024, Caprera: Bergwanderung auf den Poggio Stefano und den Teialone

While my dear wife enjoys the peace and quiet on the terrace, I have a hiking day with our three children. The mountains of Caprara that we are looking at are very tempting and are free of clouds today. We park at the Garibaldi Museum and hike along a narrow path. It goes past a water reservoir that is half dried up and is home to a cheerful green biotope. The rocky path leads through yellow flowers, and at one point we find large chunks of quartz in the omnipresent granite. After a short stretch across the road, an unmarked path leads steeply uphill through a valley to Poggio Stefano, which is an impressive 198 meters high. Further up the path is stony, and below the summit we find an abandoned house. Presumably all relics of the island's military past. Now we continue up a set of stairs. The path is completely safe and can also be managed by the father who is afraid of heights and is worried about his brood romping about. Wonderful views reward the hikers. Right at the top of the summit we find a lookout with a vaulted ceiling and a collapsed roof underneath. From here you can look down on Cala Coticcio, the strictly protected dream bay that can only be visited with a guide. Alternatively, a sailing ship can also help, which we see lying picturesquely in the blue sea in front of the bay. Now you should be able to fly! After a mountaineer's picnic, we descend again to climb the second peak, Teialone, which is a little higher at 212 meters. To my great surprise, my eldest brought "Go out, my heart, and seek joy" from her school trip, which we learn and sing together verse by verse. A vintage pleasure that we all enjoy. After a short stretch on the road, a path branches off to Teialone, which is much easier to walk than the path to Poggio Stefano. It leads gently up, offers beautiful views and ends at an abandoned building. From here, the stairs lead to the summit, which was also a military structure. At the very top of the summit, however, the parapets have collapsed, so we decide not to walk the last few meters. After the stairs, we go down an alternative path that leads us back to the road. Here we suddenly hear a crash and watch two mountain goats fighting, which are not disturbed by us. After a short stretch on the road, a beautiful path leads us through pine forests back to the starting point.
