Wem Mill

Highlight • Historical Site

There has been a mill on this site, beside the River Roden, since medieval times. The current building is Grade II listed and was converted to flats in the mid 2000s. It is said that a secret tunnel runs beneath Mill Street, connecting the building formerly known as The Moathouse to Roden House, the former rectory. There are blocked doorways in the cellars of both of these houses.

This gorgeous woodland sits on the side of a sandstone ridge and is a mixture of broad-leaf and conifer trees. While heavily wooded, there are several viewpoints that offer fantastic views of the flatter, patchwork landscape to the south.

Significant quarrying took place here and many buildings in the surroundings were built out of Grinshill sandstone. Today, this site is protected and is a thriving habitat for wildlife and flora.

Grinshill Hill Viewpoint

Highlight • Natural Monument

Rising to 629 feet (192 m), Grinshill Hill sits immediately north of Grinshill village. Formed of Triassic sandstone, considerable quarrying has taken place here and many buildings have been constructed out of it. In fact, the door surround at Number 10 Downing Street is made from Grinshill sandstone.

For walkers, the viewpoint on the hill offers fantastic views of the low-lying north Shropshire countryside and is well worth the hike up.

February 18, 2023, 483 Wem: A Newly Discovered Ghost (Shops)

A lovely little linear walk from Yorton to Wem. We've walked a very similar route to this previously - so thought (as we left the church) that we leave through the south gate as on the other walk, however we discovered that we shouldn't, we should have left through the north lych gate and follow the track round. As we were already on the road we just stayed on this until we reached the track. There were great views from the detour up to the toposcope and trig 👌🏻 A 5 min train ride back to Yorton from Wem conpleted the day x

What a lovely little linear walk from Yorton to Wem. The village of Tilley is just stunning with its half timbered, black and white properties! We had a great debrief at the Castle Hotel (Joules pub) then caught the 6 minute train ride back to the start.
