Heilig-Geist Church Teupitz

Highlight • Religious Site

The Evangelical Holy Spirit Church is a sacred building from 1346. Traces and remains of a small field stone church, which was then built between the castle and the market, can still be found today for the attentive observer in the east wall of the Holy Spirit Church.

The Mittelmühle is a former watermill whose wooden water wheel is still turning. The attached inn serves modest and very reasonably priced dishes in generous portions.

Abandoned Buildings of Massow

Highlight • Historical Site

Command 3 of the guard regiment based here was responsible for the secret radio objects in Zeesen, Wernsdorf and Gosen and the guards for the outer ring of the Stasi prison in Hohenschönhausen.

There was a military training area, shooting ranges and training tracks.

The Ministry for State Security (Stasi) was also active on the site and trained officers of the then Iraqi head of state Saddam Hussein here. These received training in close combat and in dealing with explosives and nerve agents. In addition, friendly countries such as Ethiopia, Libya and the PLO also sent their cadres to Massow.

From 1995 the area was used as a rest area with a hotel. In the meantime, this operated as a rehabilitation clinic until 2012 and went bankrupt. The building served as the Spreewald Inn hotel until 2015. Today it is a shelter for asylum seekers. Some of the other buildings are empty or have been rented out to private individuals.

The monument stands on the market square in the center of the town at the intersection of Markt and Poststrasse. To the northwest, on Kirchstrasse, is the Church of the Holy Spirit; to the southeast is Teupitz Town Hall.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the veterans' association, the Association of Former Comrades in Arms of Teupitz and the surrounding area, craftsmen erected the work of art by the German sculptor Arnold Künne in 1904. It consisted of an imperial crown, an iron cross, a bronze relief of the emperor and a Prussian eagle weighing around 150 kg. A plaque commemorated those who died in the Franco-Prussian War.

In 1922, the monument was enclosed by a wall made of field stones. Another plaque entitled "In memory of our heroes who fell in the World War 1914-1918" now also commemorated the 41 victims of the First World War. After the end of the Second World War, the relief and the eagle disappeared in 1945; nothing is known about their whereabouts. The number of those killed in the Second World War was unclear in 2006 - a corresponding plaque is missing.

On September 1, 1966 - on World Peace Day in the GDR - the memorial was redesigned and from then on referred to as a peace memorial. The Iron Cross was covered by a new plaque showing a dove of peace. Craftsmen also attached a granite plaque with the inscription: "The dead of two world wars, the victims of fascism, remind us that war should never again start from German soil."

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the dove of peace was removed, while the granite plaque remained. The imperial crown and the plaque for those killed in the Franco-Prussian War were reinstalled.
