Schwarza River Potholes

Highlight • Natural Monument

For thousands of years, the whirlpools of the Schwarza have used stone and boulders to cut round pits into the shale. They are protected as hydrogeological natural monuments and are very rare.

Eberstein Hunting Lodge

Highlight • Historical Site

It was built in 1844 in the Moorish style that was common at the time and was used by the royal family until 1918, particularly for wild boar hunting. The castle was located in a large wild boar enclosure, a type of enclosure known as a "sucking garden". In this area, wild boars were cared for and looked after for the royal hunt. The castle is usually closed, but today it is used by the municipality of Dittersdorf, which also organizes its maintenance, as an event venue.

Griesbachfelsen Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Griesbachfelsen is the most impressive rock formation on this route. It's not just the fantastic view of the deep, beautiful Schwarzatal that makes the journey up here worth it; this rock was dedicated to Professor of the Theological Faculty in Jena, Johann Jakob Griesbach.

The legend of the Devil's Stairway

Once a stranger came to the Schwarzatal and freed a beautiful fisher girl. The answer had already been given, when the bride at the last moment realized that she had never engaged anyone else but the devil. With horror she fled up the steep hill, but the devil tore stones from the rock and built a huge staircase. At the seventh stage, he caught up with the fugitive and wanted to seize her, but suddenly a violent thunderstorm exploded, a bolt of lightning tore the pursuer in the depths, and the girl was able to save herself for blast disks.

At the said seventh stage is now the Devil Steps hut.

Also a nice vantage point, high above the Schwarzatal. Should not be missed when hiking in this area.

Bark Hut at Trippstein

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The bark house, from which you have a very nice view of the Schwarzatal, was built by Macheleit, a co-inventor of Thuringian porcelain.

May 9, 2024,Schwarzatal I Rundwanderung Bad Blankenburg
The first half was perfect and had a bit of everything: effort right from the start, then magnificent viewpoints, hiking on buttery soft paths and through grass. After our detour to Schwarzburg, the ground was monotonous (cycle path) - we quickly changed our route. Next time we'll vary it further.

We haven't hiked for a long time, and a sunny May 1st is just what we need! Of course, we only touched on the length of the Schwarza Valley, 53 km. Others did it from start to finish, loudly on two wheels, a popular motorcycle route. The hike was quite varied, especially the first part to Schwarzburg. Then, after a …

A very beautiful circular hike in the Schwarzatal Valley in Thuringia, uncrowded even during peak summer season!
The hike is not demanding and can be shortened or adjusted at any time.

Unfortunately I had problems with the GPS signal at the beginning of the tour. That's why the first piece is missing. Start was where the goal is. From there over the Schwarza to the Trippstein, over Rolle in the direction of Cordobang.

Today it was the turn of the “house tour” again through the wildly romantic Schwarzatal🌝
Despite the holidays and the weekend there were hardly any people out and about, unfortunately none 🍄

The Schwarzatal Panorama Trail is a quality “Wanderbares Deutschland” trail that runs from Rudolstadt over a length of 136 kilometers and circles the wildly romantic Schwarza valley and leads through a cultural landscape that has been shaped for centuries. Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to hike the entire length of the trail at the moment. So that I can …
