Nauen Gate

Highlight • Monument

Nauen Gate Potsdam
The Nauen Gate is one of the three surviving city gates of Potsdam. It was built in 1754/1755 and is considered the first building in the neo-Gothic style in continental Europe.
In 1722, about 400 meters from today's location, the first Nauen Gate was built during the so-called 1st Baroque town expansion as one of the five town gates in the town wall. In 1733, during the II. Baroque expansion of the city, a new gate was built 20 meters in front of today's square. In 1754/1755, 20 years before the actual beginning of the neo-Gothic on the continent, the architect Johann Gottfried Büring designed the Nauen Gate in Potsdam, based on a sketch by King Friedrich II. In 1867-1869 this gate was rebuilt by King Wilhelm I into its present form.

Oranierrondell, Sanssouci Park

Highlight • Monument

The Orange Roundel is one of the largest roundels in Sanssouci. The busts represent Dutch nobles. Dutch and Prussian nobles were related to each other through various marriages. The roundel and its size can be understood as a gesture of respect towards friends and relatives. postcolonialpotsdam.org/2020/03/22/das-oranierrondell-und-der-brandenburgischer-enslavement trade/

Sanssouci Palace

Highlight • Castle

No visit to Potsdam is complete without a detour to the most famous sight, Sanssouci Palace. Built in Rococo style from 1745 to 1747 based on King Friedrich II's own sketches, the vineyard castle was the king's summer residence. The tour with audio guide is worthwhile - as is a long walk through the beautiful park.

In the summer months, the vineyard terraces are particularly beautiful, the motif of the wine can also be found in the interior design. If you want to admire the park and castle in summer, you should get up early - or enjoy the evening hours.

Historic Windmill at Sanssouci

Highlight • Monument

Historic mill of Sanssouci
The historic mill of Sanssouci is a reconstruction of a Dutch windmill of the gallery Dutch type built between 1787 and 1791 under Friedrich Wilhelm II. It stands a few meters west of Potsdam's Sanssouci Palace and is known for its predecessor, which is associated with the legend of The Miller of Sanssouci; this is what the suffix “historical” refers to. Because of this story, she is primarily associated with the Prussian King Frederick II.
At the end of the Second World War, the wooden mill structure burned down during hostilities. After repair work on the stone base in the 1980s, it was rebuilt between 1991 and 1993. The mill building, which is managed by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG) and is a listed building, has been run as a museum by the Mühlenvereinigung Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. since 1995.

tell their stories.

Twelve figures of leading French sculptors of the 18th century are set up around the large fountain below the palace, in the "garden paterre" and in the center of the main avenue. Until 1842 there was only one water basin. Only with the construction of the waterworks on the banks of the Havel does the fountain bubble here as well.

The 12 figures represent the four elements (earth, fire, water, air) surrounded by eight gods (Apollo, Diana, Juno, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Minerva, Venus). All figures stand on 1.31 meters high, round ones
Marble plinths.

The first figures, Mercury and Venus, were erected in 1750. They were created in 1748 by the French sculptor Jean Baptiste Pigalle. Frederick the Great got it from the French King Louis XV. given in return for valuable horses that he had received.

Brandenburger Street

Highlight • Settlement

The Brandenburger Straße, also affectionately called "Boulevard" by the Potsdamers, and its side streets invite you to stroll. Here, as in the Dutch Quarter, there are many small and large shops, cozy cafes and restaurants. The Karstadt Stadtpalais with its beautiful atrium is worth a visit, even if you don't want to go shopping.
