Nieuweschans Garrison Church

Highlight • Religious Site

When it was constructed in 1751, the building acquired a multifunctional character: the attic was converted into an ammunition and hayloft. In the current vestry, located behind the church, there used to be two horse stables. In the nineteenth century, these functions were abolished and the attic was demolished, giving the church space a vault. In the interior, the pulpit from the early 19th century stands out. The text boards originally come from the Der Aa Church in Groningen. There is also a so-called arrest bench at the back of the church, where the punished soldiers could attend the church service.
