Reykjadalur - The "Steam" Valley

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

The walk to Drottningarhola and the warm water river in Reykjadalur is approximately 3 km long and takes approximately 45-60 minutes one way, with plenty of opportunities for photo stops along the way. Along the way you will encounter several hot springs and mud pools, and the walking route can sometimes be steep and narrow.

Reykjadalur Hot Spring River

Highlight • River

The bathing area is beautifully situated between two plank banks. Here you can find a suitable place to bathe. The higher the warmer. Do you think it's too hot? You have a cold inflow via a second watercourse. This way you can play with the temperature.

Highlight • Viewpoint

A beautiful circular trail above the swimming area, which, if conditions are right, is absolutely easy and well signposted. There are a few steep climbs, but the trails are always well-maintained.

Reykjadalur Geothermal Area

Highlight • Natural Monument

Constant bubbling and hissing, colors that seem otherworldly and a slight H2S smell in the air - that's when you understand where all the legends come from.

View of Reykjadalur Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

The valley can be left on a gravel path or ascent at the end of the valley to continue the hike. It offers a breathtaking view of the steaming valley. Alternatively, this path can also be used as an entrance to the valley if you arrive via the nearby highland road.

A rather modest waterfall, but a beautiful one. The path to it is recognizable, but somewhat more difficult.

Hot spring in Reykjadalur (Steam Valley)

Highlight • Natural Monument

After a marked path to the source of the Reykjadalsá turns into a rock gorge, we can walk to the steam columns and marvel at another fascinating geothermal area with solfatars, mud and hot springs.

It's lovely to lie in a stream at 43 degrees - we've never done that before, ᛇ.

Bubbling, hissing, bubbling...it's good that you can't smell the photos. How did various geothermal fields of the place come off today, bathed in the bathtub-warm water of the Varma in Reykjadalur and then enjoyed the view to þingvellir.

Definitely underestimated the weather conditions. With just simple hiking boots over ice and snow with rain, hail and a lot of wind on the way back. Make sure you take spikes or other hiking aids with you. The tour itself is incredibly beautiful. Impressive colors, landscapes and bathing in the river between and snow is wow 💚
