Cawfields Quarry: Lake and Visitor Facilities

Highlight • Rest Area

Cawfields Quarry is a former quarry located directly on Hadrian's Wall near Haltwhistle. Constructed in the early 20th century, the quarry cut through the Roman wall, exposing the underlying dolerite rock of the Whin Sill. This geological formation formed a natural defensive line upon which the Romans built their wall.
Following the quarry's closure, the site has been redeveloped into a peaceful recreation area with a picturesque lake, picnic areas, and walking trails. The area offers direct access to Milecastle 42.

Caw Gap and Turret 41A on Hadrian's Wall

Highlight • Natural Monument

This is beautiful Caw Gap where Turret 41A is located. It was unearthed by exploratory excavation in 1912. It had a doorway on the east side of the south wall. In the later Roman period, the turret was deliberately demolished, and the Wall rebuilt across its site. The remains of Turret 41A were consolidated in 1972-3 and are 20 centimetres high.

Steel Rigg and Hadrian's Wall

Highlight • Historical Site

One of the most iconic features in the Northumbrian landscape, the cliff face of Steel Rigg shows how the Romans incorporated the natural landscape into their defences against the barbarians.

Sycamore Gap and Hadrian's Wall

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

"The Hadrian's Wall was a Roman frontier fortification system of the British Limes, which was between Newcastle and Solway Firth, near the present-day border between Scotland and England in the UK, was built between 122 and 128 AD by order of Emperor Hadrian (76-138 [...] Large parts of the ramparts still exist today, especially in the most impressive middle section of the landscape.Mostly running on high plateaus, one has a good view over the surrounding area. This monument is today one of the most famous tourist attractions in the north of England and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. " (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrianswall)

I know this section around the well-known Sycamore Gap, also known as the Robin Hood Tree, and can only recommend a hike along this old border fort!

Milecastle 39, known as Castle Nick, is nestled between Highshield Crags and Peel Crags. With views to the north and south, it survives well. The milecastle appears to have been occupied until the late 4th century.
