Kilburn White Horse

Highlight • Historical Site

Kilburn White Horse is one of the most famous landmarks in North Yorkshire. The turf-cut figure, the most northerly of its kind in Britain, is 314 feet (96 m) long and 220 feet (67 m) high and dates from 1857.

When you are above the White Horse it is difficult to get a sense of its enormous scale so it is worth following the steps down to view it from below.

Yorkshire Gliding Club

Highlight • Viewpoint

Iconic landmark on the plateau above Roulston Scar near Sutton Bank. Founded in 1934, the Yorkshire Gliding Club boasts a fascinating history and once included Amy Johnson as a member. Plenty of benches along the Cleveland Way where you can stop and watch when flying is taking place.

On the 5th May 1943, Halifax JD105 was returning to the airfield from Germany and flying through fog. The plane clipped the edge of Hood Hill and crash landed, resulting in the deaths of five out of the eight airmen on aboard. Here, you can find a memorial to the airmen.

View from Sutton Bank

Highlight • Viewpoint

It's widely regarded as one of the best viewpoints in England, offering a breathtaking panorama that stretches for miles.

On a clear day, you can see the stunning view of the Vale of York and the Yorkshire Dales. The view is particularly beautiful in the autumn, when the leaves turn golden, creating a stunning contrast with the rugged landscape.

For those seeking a peaceful retreat in the midst of nature, Sutton Bank's view is a must-visit destination in England.

A very curious and isolated boulder on the track down to Gormire Lake. Nearly, but not quite a perfect cube. It is around 8-10 feet on all sides.

Gormire Lake

Highlight • Natural

This is a tranquil and majestic lake that is surrounded by lush woodland. As there are no rivers or streams flowing into the lake, it is thought to be fed by an underground spring and drained by a limestone channel. The lake is extremely popular with wild swimmers as the water is very clean, there are no currents and surprisingly warm. So, if you are hiking through the nature reserve, a quick dip could be a glorious addition to your day.

View of Gormire Lake from Whitestone Cliff

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

High on Whitestone Cliff, on part of the classic Cleveland Way trail, you are rewarded with spectacular views over Gormire Lake and miles beyond.

If you are exploring Garbutt Wood Nature Reserve and the lake from below, it's worth a stroll to the cliff tops for the views. You won’t regret it.
