Dent Village

Highlight • Historical Site

Dent is the only village in the picturesque Dentdale. With characteristic cobbled streets, a pink granite fountain in the centre, a 12th-century church, cafes, pubs, shops and more, it is a popular spot with hikers and a lovely place to explore.

Dent Village

Highlight • Settlement

A real must-visit village with cobbled streets, little lumps and gorgeous pastel-coloured houses. On clear days you can see as far as the sea in on direction and towards the Lake District in the other (if it's a clear winter day you might get snow-capped peaks in your line of sight). There's a train station here that's on the Settle-Carlisle line and it's the highest station in England - a bit out of town though. The train line goes over the two huge viaducts (Arten Gill and Dent Head), which were both built using massive blocks of Dent ‘marble’ from local quarries that are now out of use.

Loads of history here (to do with knitting), scattered farms, three pubs and a lot of charm.

This is a really beautiful spot, I'd walked along the river from Dent and was then going to cross over and head towards Sedbergh. Part of me didn't want to leave the riverside as it was gorgeous, even on a dull morning.

Smatt's Duo Cafe

Highlight • Cafe

Smatt's Duo Cafe accommodated this wet (and rather stinky) long distance hiker without batting an eyelid. I had a gorgeous scrambled egg and smoked salmon with crumpets and a large pot of tea. They also filled my water bottle. Great service!

St Andrew's Church, Dent

Highlight • Religious Site

Although no church was recorded in the Domesday Book, it is generally accepted that the building dates from 1130 and was subsequently enlarged adopting its present shape in 1350 when the tower was added. The inner north doorway is probably the earliest surviving part of the church, and this suggests that there has always been a north aisle. In the late 1800s, a major restoration of the church was carried out.

Millthrop Bridge

Highlight • River

Millthrop Bridge is a pretty stone bridge across the River Rawthey which dates to the 17th century and is Grade II-listed.In October 2019, the bridge suffered significant damage following an impact from an HGV and was closed to motorists. It was repaired to its former glory the following year.
