Lainbach Gorge

The Lainbach Gorge is a product of the tremendous forces of the last Ice Age and the constant work of water.
The actual "human" history of the gorge begins in the 19th century with the burgeoning enthusiasm for Alpine Romanticism.

· Pioneer Ludwig Wiedemann (around 1880): The decisive step toward developing the gorge for tourism was taken by the Mittenwald timber merchant and sawmill owner Ludwig Wiedemann. To transport timber and simultaneously promote the emerging tourism industry, he had holes drilled into the steep rock faces and wooden pins (so-called "nails" or "poles") driven into them. Planks were attached to these as walkways and platforms. This simple but daring construction made it possible for the first time to safely explore the most spectacular parts of the gorge.
· Tourist attraction: With the construction of this climbing facility, the Lainbach Gorge became one of the first official tourist destinations in the Mittenwald region. It quickly became a must-see for distinguished guests arriving by train and enjoying the Alpine air.
