Parkgate was an important port from the start of the 18th century, in particular as an embarkation point for Ireland. The River Dee, which was a shipping route to the Roman city of Deva (Chester), had partly silted up by AD 383, creating a need for a port further downstream. Quays were built, first at Burton and later near the small town of Neston, but further silting required yet another re-siting slightly further downstream near the gate of Neston's hunting park. Hence the settlement of Parkgate was born.
Parkgate flourished as a desirable residential area. The surrounds became a conservation area in 1973.
The timeless beauty of Parkgate attracts many to its antiquated promenade, where visitors can enjoy a classically British seaside feel with views across the vast salt marshes that lead onto the Dee Estuary.

View of Burton Marsh

Highlight • Viewpoint

Beautiful views that overlook Burton Marsh.
Station Lane before you enter another cycle/pedestrian lane which marks the start of the RSPB Burton Marsh. This stretch to the Welsh border is the best bit of the ride as the views over the marsh are pretty uninterrupted.. You’ll pass a few RSPB information boards along the way which will give you more facts about the marshes.

The road then turns into a cycle/pedestrian path all the way to Nets Cafe, which is a well known cyclist cafe and is very reasonably priced. There’s loads of outside seating so you don’t have to worry about locking your bikes up.

It gets busy in the summer but it's in a beautiful spot. It's worth a ride to get there.

Burton Marsh Boardwalk

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This is a fantastic 7.5km return bike ride along the Cheshire side of the Dee Estuary. It follows the National Cycle Network route number 568, running from Hawarden Bridge near the Deeside Industrial Estate all the way to Neston, Cheshire, on the Wirral peninsula. It’s not just for cyclists though, the cycle path is for pedestrians too and would be fantastic for prams, so I’ll include this post in the walks section too.
On a clear day the views across the marshes and estuary towards North Wales are beautiful.

Once upon a time the River Dee ran right up alongside the shores of Burton up to Parkgate. As shipping access to the city of Chester became impossible because of the silting of its port, quays were built in the early seventeenth century (although it’s suspected that quays existed here since medieval times) at Burton and Neston to serve as outports for the city. As they became victims of silting themselves, a further port was built at Parkgate. Between them they functioned as trading ports.

June 6, 2025,Wales Coast Path, Burton Marshes & Chester Millennium Greenway
At long last, this route from Chester using the Welsh Coast Path outbound (taking a detour to Burton Marshes & Net's Café) and returning to Chester via the Chester Millennium Greenway (part of NCN route 5) has been on my to do list for ages. You'd never guess that I like Bridges & the ornate NCN route markers. Quite a …
